Just because I know this stuff and I figure someone might care:

The Oneida flatware company is an outgrowth of the Oneida Community, a social utopian movement based in Oneida, N.Y. starting in 1848.

Oneida, N.Y. is located a couple of miles from a 32 acre patch of land which is the only land Oneida Indian Nation has held continuiously, as tribal land, since before the colonists arrived on our shores. If you look closely at a map of the area, you will also see Oneida Castle, so named because it was once an important village for the Oneida Indians. Another significant village was Oriskany, closer to Utica.

The Oneidas were part of the Iroquois Confederacy, the powerful American Indian group that long controlled upstate New York. From east to west, the nations were: Mohawk (between Albany and Utica), Oneida (between Utica and Syracuse), Onondaga (Syracuse area) Cayuga (between Syracuse and Rochester) and the Seneca, in the Buffalo area. The Seneca, incidentally, dramatically expanded their reach during the colonial era, pushing past what is now Erie, Pa. into the Connecticut Western Reserve of what is now Northeast Ohio.

I believe the Oneida Band of the Thames started when many Iroquois felt compelled to move to Canada after the Revolutionary War. Most Iroquois had sided with the British. The Band of the Thames reserve is located near Brantford, named for Joseph Brant, a Mohawk chief who sided with the British.

In the main, the Oneidas broke ranks and sided with the colonists. In fact, it is said the Oneidas helped feed George Washington's troops by bringing native corn to Valley Forge.

Many if not most Oneidas moved to Wisconsin around the 1830s when, after a series of legally-flawed land treaties, they no longer had significant holdings in their ancestrial home. They cut a deal with the Menominees to share tribal lands near Green Bay.

Anyway, that's why there is a basketball tournament sponsored by an Oneida Indian casino in Green Bay.

There is a Seneca High School in Erie that was in my conference in High school. The Native American influence, especially in town, school, and mascot naming in that area, reaching in to NY, is everywhere.
