I still love Dan Dakich
Did anyone listen to Dan's interview today on 1470 with Norm?
For all he's been through, I came away still respecting he heck out of him. Unlike some other coaches we have here he insisted that everything thus far was his fault. He reiterated that he knew things could be like this when he chose this profession. He just wanted to make sure that everyone knew that his kids were working their tails off to be the best players they can be. He wanted all of the fans to know they're free to say anything they want about him, but to lay off his players because they're working as hard as can be expected.
Listening to this interview I just couldn't help but have a great respect for Dan Dakich. He sounded like a defeated man in the postgame Saturday, but today was different. Here is a guy that knows he is quite likely on his way out. Yet still he is working his tail off to make this team better...to make these players better. I get the feeling that he'll continue to root for these players & this team where ever he is.
I hate the motion offense. I hate the stubborn insistence on playing nothing but man defense. I hate the way we come out of timeouts. I hate the strange substitution patterns. I hate how we seem to be one of the least athletic teams in the conference. Most of all I'm sick & tired of all the losing.
Still, all that being said, I cannot help but respect the hell out of Dan Dakich. With that in mind I'm changing my sig, because even though I've been one of the more vocal critics, I still have a great respect for the man. No matter what happens in the future, I will always find myself rooting for him.

Yeah, when DD leaves, and I believe he will, it will a solemn day. No parties for me.hammb wrote:Did anyone listen to Dan's interview today on 1470 with Norm?

I'm hoping that Dan will find a cave in Tibet where he can seriously contemplate his offensive strategy and substitution patterns. Once enlightened, I will fully expect him to re-emerge as a successful D1 coach.

I've always respected the guy simply because he's plain spoken. I always hope there is some way we could keep him in the BGSU family (asst AD or something).
He's a great individual and no W/L records will ever change my viewpoint on that.

Does it get any more real than speaking up for cheeseburgers for Al-Mar Lanes?
Something about that is perfectly Dan Dakich.

This is one of the great things that I admire about Coach Dakich. He takes full responsibility for things, and always gets his players to work hard.hammb wrote:Did anyone listen to Dan's interview today on 1470 with Norm?

I will truly miss his personality, and I wish him nothing but the best wherever he lands his next job.

Sheesh, People!!!!
Last I heard, DAN WAS STILL HERE!!! Stop talking about him in past tense!!
And Hammb, that was a good post on Dan, the person (I ignored the Basketball comments
). What you said about him is why I have always liked him. I know very little about the ins and outs of mechanics of the game of basketball, just know what I see in the person he is. He's a REALLY great guy.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I have only been in BG for just over a year and a half. I really have admired how DD carries himself. I have met him a handful of times and he never has anything, but good things to say about his team, the school, and the community. He always takes the fall and I am grateful that he is a BGSU caoch and BGSU family member. If this is indeed the end for Dan Dakich at BG as head coach, I wish him luck in the future. I think it would be great if he were to stay here as an assistant AD.
BGSU fan for LIFE!!!!
FEAR THE BIRD!

FEAR THE BIRD!

I don't see DD even accepting an Asst AD position IF it was offered. He's a younger coach and I believe he has a lot more good years left in him. All in all, like many have stated, DD is a good coach; just maybe not for our program anymore. It seems he may need a fresh start. But we'll see. Maybe Christopher will suprise the hell out of everyone and give him a 1 year extension. Weirder things have happened. We won't know until it happens.svillefalcon wrote:I have only been in BG for just over a year and a half. I really have admired how DD carries himself. I have a good connection with Dakich, not me personally, but through someone I know very very well. Through all the things I have heard from this person and all the experiences I have had with Coach personally, he is truly a first-rate, top-class guy. He pushes his guys to be the best players and the best people that they can be, and he wants to see his guys through to graduation. He is honest and is fine with taking the blame for a bad season or a mistake that has been made (unlike other coaches we have here at BG who seem to have a book full of random excuses.) All the great things about Coach and all the positive experiences I had had both first- and second-hand were what infuriated me in reading these boards in the past few years. Thread after thread dealt with "Fire Dakich" and who is hosting the party the day his contract expires. Every bad thing that happened with the team landed straight on his head in the eyes of the fans, and he was cool with that. He's an AWESOME guy, I believe he is a wonderful role model for the players and others who interact with him. But I always hoped that through all the anger, people on this board never lost sight of what was really important about the guy. It's not his basketball stats or anything like that; he wants to graduate his guys and make sure that they have the tools to succeed in their future endeavors. He's a first-rate guy who has had a great tenure at BG, whether it ends next month or, by chance, it continues. I'd love to have him around here longer, but wherever he goes next, that place will be lucky.

I continue to have a hard time figuring out why people keep using the above quote as a reason to support Coach Dakich. You point out that his finest points as a coach are that "he wants to see his players through and graduate". Unfortunately this is one of the worst things he has done at BGSU. During his ten years, a low percentage of players have completed their time as a basketball player and graduated. It is the truth, plain and simple. As I said before, this is not the place to name names of graduates or non graduates, registration and records or the alumni center it their for you.BGSUSynchroSk8r2006 wrote:I have a good connection with Dakich, not me personally, but through someone I know very very well. If you truly love this man, at least pick some things that he does well and praise him for it. Don't make up ideas. I am usually the voice of sarcastic truth on this site, but if I am going to criticize I should do something to help fix the problem. I will share something Dan actually does/has did. He does a good job hosting his summer camp. There have been instances where he will let kids come for free, if money is tight for the parents at home. That is commendable.
