An alarming trend for BG vs. MAC opponents

Post by BGSU33 »

Yes, this is a glass half-empty post and I am well aware of that. But with that said, after glancing over some of the figures below, I had no idea how badly skewed BG’s series history against MAC opponents has turned in recent years. There’s no doubt the last five years or so have been very difficult years for us, but some of these streaks are just alarming. In fairness, if you stretch some of the streaks beyond the last few years for some teams, there is less of a discrepancy. Nonetheless, if the last few years haven’t been painful enough, take a look at some of these dubious trends:

BG vs…..

Kent State: Lost 16 of last 20, including last 6 at home.
Western Michigan: Lost 8 in a row, including last 4 at home.
Ball State: Lost 15 of last 21.
Toledo: Lost 10 of last 14.
Akron: Lost 5 in a row, including last 3 at home.
Ohio: Lost 4 in a row, 5 of last 6.
Miami: Lost 5 of last 6.
Buffalo: Lost 4 of last 6.
Northern Illinois: Lost 3 in a row, 4 of last 7.
Central Michigan: Lost 2 of last 3, 5 of last 9
Eastern Michigan: Lost last meeting at home.
GO BG!!!

As if I wasn't depressed enough over this season!!!!! I didn't realize it was THAT BAD. No wonder I gave mt tickets away to avoid seeing the game. ( At least I put a couple of bodies there - I could have just left my seats empty). I have to admit - it took me a while to find someone to take them - and I have deluxe chair seats right behind the team. How sad is that!!!!!

The topper was Jim Christain saying how we're so "well coached."

Coaches say that when other coaches are in trouble because they want them to stay around so they can keep beating them.

I have no doubt DD is putting in a yeoman effort, but it simply isn't translating to games.

And I believe we are now 7-26 in our last 33 MAC contests. 5-13 last year, 2-13 so far this year. Unacceptable. 7-26????

AND our game Sunday is on television. How painful is that? Only two more games and this season is just an unpleasant memory. Then next year - we actually have players stay, the coach leaves this time - - - - and we start winning again.

I ALMOST FEEL HOPEFUL AGAIN!!!!!!

I'm not taking that bet. I can't wait to see where he lands and how he does.

33, I have no idea what you think you're analyzing here. When you have losing seasons, you have losing records against your opponents during those seasons. These two unavoidably go hand in hand. The alarming trend is the losing seasons. What you're doing is saying "Gah! Look, and we actually have losing records against the teams we played during those losing seasons." As if there is some additional meaning to be derived beyond that from the overall record. Silly.

Also, pointing out that we've lost 16 of the last 20 to Kent says, um, nothing. EVERYBODY in the damned conference can say about the same thing.

I think it is clear. Yearly, we have a losing record. However, we load up on a cupcake nonconference schedule and the season results never look that bad. When you look at the games that count, it's another story. We haven't been able to compete in conference for quite some time. The numbers merely highlight the futility.

I think the team that won 18 a few years ago was decent...they weren't a serious threat to win the MAC, but they had the talent to win against just about anybody in the league if things went perfectly.

We haven't been a legit threat to win since Keith left. That's a long time to spend rebuilding. I think the fact that we haven't been to the NCAA's since 1968 helps Dan more than the OOC schedule. People look at the careers of Weinert and Larranaga here and see that they didn't make it either...so it makes it easier to excuse Dan for not making it.

Personally, I haven't EXPECTED this team to make the NCAA's since 82/83.

I hoped they would a time or two...but I've been conditioned to assume they won't. I'm sure I'm not unique in that respect.

I expected us to get in Keith's Senior year. I wasn't nearly as cynical then as I am now.

You're unique in a lot of respects, but that is not one of them!
