I think he's highly overrated as a coach, but this is a big deal for Krebs and the Lobos.

In this article it said the connection is because the New Mexico president has a relationship with Alford.
Steve was a darn good basketball player, he has yet to show that as a coach. He's a big name but way over priced.

I agree. They've never been able to take the next step in the conference or nationally. Last year was their banner year and Alford was still forced to clean out his coaching staff, letting two assistants go and bringing in former Ball State coach Tim Buckley. The Iowa fan base has been uneasy for a few years because the expectations were so high at the onset.Tricky_Falcon wrote:http://www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com/phpBB2/v ... hp?t=15693

DD is close with both Alford and Buckley so the whole deal would seem like a perfect match except for one tiny detail...they're in New Mexico! Why bring in a Midwest coach with a Midwest staff and practically no ties to the region? Their rival, New Mexico State, has the ultimate West Coast insider in Reggie Theus and is cleaning up on the floor and in recruiting.
Alford is a name coach, but this is about as bizarre a hire as you can get.

I'd want to know why we decided to break the bank on an underachieving coach who Iowa fans wanted gone with no discernable ties to the region and its AAU/high school scene. The Iowa athletic department even purchased the rights to the domain name stevealfordmustgo.com after a disgruntled fan had already purchased firestevealford.com. This is a strange, strange hire.
BTW, word on the street is that Dakich will indeed be one of his assistants and that LaMonta Stone will also join the staff as the third assistant.
Guess we could take that as a sign that Stone is not in the running for the head job here.JoeFalcon wrote:BTW, word on the street is that Dakich will indeed be one of his assistants and that LaMonta Stone will also join the staff as the third assistant.

I would only believe this if the word on the street came from Huggy Bear.Warthog wrote:JoeFalcon wrote:BTW, word on the street is that Dakich will indeed be one of his assistants and that LaMonta Stone will also join the staff as the third assistant.

If this is true I might have to start rooting for New Mexio too. Krebs put together a great scenario. I would expect one or more of our players to head to NM.JoeFalcon wrote:Not me.orangeandbrown wrote: if we were NM fans we'd be thrilled to get him.
