The Tony Dungy of college basketball

Post by bgsufn »

Quoting from Maureen's article:
Miami coach Charlie Coles has known Orr since Orr was growing up in Cincinnati. Orr and Coles spoke a few weeks ago about BGSU's opening, and Coles said he told Orr the "community was a very good place" and "the gym worked for the home team every time."

"He's a very, very outstanding man," Coles said. "He's a Christian, he's got great values and a pretty even temperament. He's the Tony Dungy of college basketball."
If what Charlie says is true, this is a heck of a hire for BGSU. I'm very excited about next season!!

I emailed Grant that same line. I'm very excited about this hire.

The more I think about this hire, the more I like it. I was originally of the mind that we needed a young, enthusiastic assistant ...a basketball Urban Meyer if you will.

Orr brings something we sorely needed....stability. Maybe we need to lower the temperature a bit and establish some consistency. When Meyer came in the challenge was overcoming the ennui of the end of the Blackney era. We needed some fire. The challenge coming out of the Dakich era is establishing a stable roster and rebuilding interest. I think Orr can do that here. He has strong Ohio ties...they would be enhanced if he hires coach Jackson.. and he has a certain amount of political capital derived from his success in the Big East and his career in the NBA. He has credibility by the bushel...dare I say it...he has GRAVITAS!

He left Seton Hall as a winner. Normally when a winning coach is fired red flags go up regarding personal conduct. That does not appear to be the case with Orr. Rumor has it that there were some personnel conflicts with the AD regarding which assistants would be retained. The idea that he would sacrifice so much to retain control of his staff isn't exactly a negative in my opinion.

Yeah... I like this hire.

I have a friend who lives in Jersey and is an avid Seton Hall booster. I asked him for the 411 on Orr. His response was....

"Orr is a good coach. He is not a big time program kind of guy. He is very low key and does not fit in with big time high school players. He did very well at Siena. He is from Ohio and should be able to get the kind of players he needs to compete in the MAC. I would not be suprised if he is successful. Also, I do not think he will jump ship."

I think that while this assesment is short, it is very accurate. This should prove to be a very solid hire.

I like the hire too. Everything I read about Orr seems like he's good people. We like good people here in BG. I don't think we're going to get the same funny comments in the pressers that we'd get from Coach Dakich, but Orr seems like a standout guy.

On top of that he's been a winner in a major basketball conference. He played/coached under Boeheim so I have to believe that he is somewhat flexible in his defensive sets...I don't think we'll be forcing our team into man defense for the entirety of every game...obviously 'cuse is known for their zone.

I love the fact that he's a big guy with NBA experience. I think we'll learn how to feed the post and utilize mismatches down low (when we have them). I also think this will help him teach our big men how to play without fouling out every game.

The more I read about Orr the more I like the hire. You'd be hard pressed to hire a basketball coach in the MAC that has a better resumé. I was hoping for a more uptempo style than the defensive style Orr seems to prefer, but if we win I don't care how we play :) People have said that he struggled recruiting at the Big East level, but I hope he can at least recruit on the MAC level. In the end it takes a real good recruiter to get quality talent to play in Anderson. If he's capable of doing that I think he'll have some success here.

perfect comparison!!

Orr's system is almost identical to what Charlie does down in Oxford. The difference is that Orr's teams are a bit more oportunistic with the fast break. There are times when Charlie wants his team to walk it up even if the break is there. Orr's teams will stress defensie first but when they get a rebound, they always look to push it up court to get an easy fast break bucket. If that's not there, then they will pull it out and go into the half court set....and run clock. He is going to need to go find 2 true point guards (a starter and a backup) first and foremost. Then, he needs to teach Otis Polk how to play basketball rather than just be a screen setter and space filler. The rest of the returning roster will fit very nicely into what Orr likes his teams to do (He is going to LOVE Nate Miller and he'll be a nice influence on Marschall as well). I think Dakich got a lot out of very little....but Orr is a better coach with a system better suited for the kids Dakich recruited. .500 in the MAC and a top 6 seed for the tourney is a really nice goal for this team to strive for.

I predict that there will be a lot of happy hoops fans in Bowling Green Ohio in 07-08. The men are going to be the most improved team in the conference and the women are re-loaded with a great freshman class. God, is it November yet??? :D

Charlie Coles is a very credible source and he speaks from the heart. He sees something and isn't afraid to tell everyone exactly what he sees. Having Coach Coles have this much respect for OUR new coach, speaks volumes to me about the type of individual who IS going to finally lead us back to the NCAA tournament.

And as far as 10 year teases of winning it all, I say bring it on! That would be a welcome change. No offense to Coach Dakich, who I greatly respected, but his teams weren't having the kind of sucess we hope for around here!

Great hire Mr.Christopher and welcome aboard Coach Orr!!!

Yeah, but is Charlie's heart one from which you'd take any advice?

Praise like that from a man like Charlie Coles is all I need to know that we have made an absolutely impeccable hire. Premature, as such a declaration might be, I do declare that we are mighty lucky to have Coach Orr at BGSU!

That being said, for me, this is the official ending of the Dan Dakich era at BGSU. He is the only Bowling Green coach I have ever known, and I was quite fond of the man despite the records the last few years. I miss him and probably always will, but that has nothing to do with Coach Orr in any way. I'll say it again - best of luck Dan.
