Andy Moore hired as assistant coach, DBO announced

Post by ZiggyZoomba »

Bowling Green State University men's basketball coach Louis Orr has announced that Andy Moore, a Mt. Vernon, Ohio native who had spent the last five years at Michigan, will join the Falcon program as an assistant coach. Moore will join George Jackson and LaMonta Stone as full-time members of his first BGSU staff.

"Andy is a great addition to our staff who brings a great deal to BGSU," said Orr. "He is a familiar face to high school coaches in our target recruiting area and his experience in the MAC also will be a tremendous asset to the program."

At Michigan, Moore spent four years as an assistant coach and one season as the Director of Basketball Operations. During his tenure with the Wolverines, Michigan posted three 20-win seasons and won the NIT in 2004 and advanced to the championship game in 2006. Overall, UM was 98-65 while Moore was on staff.

"I'm very excited to come to Bowling Green State University," said Moore. "I'm looking forward to working with this staff and continuing the tradition of excellence the Falcons have displayed over the years on the basketball court."

Before joining the Michigan staff, Moore spent two years as the Director of Basketball Operations at Eastern Michigan University (2000-02) where he worked with current BGSU assistant LaMonta Stone.. Prior to EMU he spent four years at California University of Pennsylvania (1996-2000). After serving as an assistant coach for his first three years, he served as assistant head coach during the 1999-2000 season.

Moore began his coaching career at Mt. Vernon High School where he was an assistant coach for the varsity boys, team (1992-94). He then moved on to Kenyon (Ohio) College where he served as an assistant men's basketball coach and head men's golf coach (1994-96).

A native of London, Ohio, Moore is a 1992 graduate of Muskingum College, where he was named first-team All-American and Player of the Year in the Ohio Athletic Conference as a senior (1991-92). He finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in Muskingum history, was a three-time All-OAC player and was elected to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Moore and his wife, Stephanie, currently reside in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Rick Palmer has joined the staff as its Director of Basketball Operations. He comes to BGSU after one year as an assistant coach at Lakeland (Mich.) College. Last year, the Muskies finished with a 16-11 record. He also served as Lakeland's men's golf coach.

Palmer graduated from Albion College in Albion, Mich., in 2006 where he was a two-year captain, four-year letter winner and graduated as the all-time leader in career wins (88 ). Off the court, he assisted the Albion staff with recruiting, got experience with video editing and spearheaded a mentor program for the basketball team at a local elementary school.

Palmer has a bachelor's degree in economics and management and is a member of The Carl A. Gerstacker Program for Professional Management.

That's a helluva staff, as good as I've seen in the conference in a while.

Of the three assistant coaches, two have been full-time assistants in the Big 10 while the other was a full-time assistant in the Big East. There is also MAC experience galore and extensive knowledge and connections to the local recruiting terrain. Oh, and the head coach is a former Big East Coach of the Year coming off an NCAA Tournament birth.

Ricardo Patton at NIU did a nice job with his staff as well in luring Dennis Gates from Cal to recruit Chicago.

(On a side note, Coach Moore was actually on the Virginia Tech campus during the day of the shooting to interview for a job:

My thoughts exactly...we have three solid assistants with high major experience and extensive recruiting ties in the area. Unlike football, I think you can do really well in the MAC recruiting almost entirely in Michigan and Ohio.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

More good news about the men's basketball program! I am really excited to see us play next season and I love the way the pieces have been falling into place in order to get BG hoops back to where it belongs.

I agree. In Basketball you only have to hit on one or two really good players to be successful. The reason why the Celtics fans are very sad right now.
