Calling All Fans
Actually, it's probably easier for you to spot hammb and say hello. He's the one in the John Floyd jersey holding hands with Coach Brandon in the lower level.

As a "townie" and an "old person" I'll be in the stands one row above the student section hoping that you all will still respond when I yell "BG". I'd like to see more students there too. Some who come are going to Omaha this weekend but more are going home for some reason----food, clean laundry.
E-mail Brian Delahoy he'e the head of marketing & promotions. Find out what they're doing ior the games. I know they advertise the games in BG Sentinel & hockey in Toledo 'cause the Storm is gone. Coach Van De Walle & her staff e-mailed all the students about the OU-BG V-ball game this year. It =d a biggger turn-out. They haven't had autograph sessions with either B-ball team like in the past.
I don't have a solution but you can give away too much then it's not special. Plus I've seen people get free stuff, stay a few minutes & leave.
Falcon Club will dismantal the Cnter Court Club if seats are needed for a game. They have a plan to execute so get them to put it to work. The pie sections had every few people seated there so they won't break the stuff down until the seats are really needed in Q. Thanks 4 reading CU @2A 'til the season's over
The Niz could you try to get your A-band to give Dave the announcer time to read 50/50 number during halftime so winnner & Falcon Club rep can see the rest of the game. THANKS!!!!!!!

I'm just a peon. I have no control over anything. The people at the table/in the booth/whatever are on a head-set with whoever is directing and we do what he says.

Re: To the dedicated row of fans
Yeah, its sad there are only 1 row of students/fans on the one sideline. The diehards usually consist of me, Kaleena , Nick , Steven, Phil Savitt , Mike "Chief Orange Hair" Burtch and maybe a few others from time to time. I remember the good ole' days too, and hope we can get back to the packed AA days but it will take time. Most of the current students have learned a culture of terrible basketball, boring basketball and losing over Dakich's last 3 years here and it won't be the super quick turnaround we like it to be. It is sad to see a bunch of BGNews paper's with the "Who's He, Nobody!" insert placed on the student benches waiting to be picked up and used at pre-game but get tossed aside. Like I've said about the team , it'll take patience.falconmama2007 wrote:What do you think would bring a better turn out? Have you tried anything or do you just focus on you being there? I luv that line of fans we have!!!! It just saddens me that its only 1 row. I must admit I luv your dedication and your passion for the game. How about also requesting the band to distract the opponents while shooting free throws? Talk to me fans.

I've read through this whole thread, and it keeps coming down to several reasons as to why we don't get student attendance at games.
1.students, especially the younger ones, tend to go home A LOT on the weekends, and they have classes on the weeknights. So we're pretty much screwed either way there.
2.if the weather is bad, we never get any attendance. The small student attendance on Sunday vs Toledo was probably due to the bitterly cold conditions and driving wind we experienced outside that day. I swear, if it's not 70 degrees and sunny, people will use ANY excuse not to come. It's too hot, its too cold, it looks like its going to rain (which is used even when its partly cloudy).
3.This is the big one. When students come to BG, like Hammb and Bleeding have said, they haven't grown up fans of BG. Most don't know much about BG athletics at first. A great number of students just assume our teams suck and are not worth watching at all, and it takes YEARS to shake people of that preconceived notion. Either that, or it will take a nationally ranked team to turn heads. The women's basketball team had a nice penetration into the students' collective minds the last few years with their strong play. But unfortunately it seems like that is what it takes to get people to notice our teams.
4.Let's face it, our men's team hasn't been good from 2003-07. That has led to a B!G decline in fan interest. Why it isn't coming back now that we're winning is probably a result of a combination of 1, 2, and 3 above. But we've got a chance for some big crowds down the stretch at least.

The orange haired kid isn't the only one over there! 8) I'm there every game (unless I'm going to support another sports team elsewhere)...and of course all those wonderful signs...that's me. Steven, Phil, Nick, myself, we're there all the time...since day one before some of the others decided to show. And Niz, it isn't just band people who support this team and are the die hards. Several non-band-ers support home and away.
However, I am upset that I will not be in attendance Saturday due to a Nebraska hockey trip. I'll be at Eastern tomorrow though, signs and all.
And as Bgsufalcons24 said, which I have heard in several occasions that people assume we suck and god forbid you support a team who "sucks".
I have tried the whole paper thing, but no one wants to do it.
We need to start getting in the heads of the other team like we use to.

Kaleena, I think the problem with "who's he? nobody!" at AA is that most students see it as a hockey tradition. It just feels weird to do that at a basketball game for some reason.Kaleena08 wrote:Of course, and I bet we need to work at the Y too...damnit...though I am graduating in May....![]()
And by paper thing, I mean no one wants to do "Who's he? Nobody!" when there are 5 people standing on the side.

BGSUcrazyfan58 and I used to really get in people's heads down there. He used to research the other teamon facebook and bring a printoff to the game and I was a demon with all that fodder.
I forget which team the girls were playing, but we came up with a different chant for each different player that touched the ball and once that started they couldn't buy a basket.
No one said band people were the only spirited ones either.
Maybe someone needs to start researching and printing off stuff to use on other teams again.

I've been rather upset since I noticed that they have been trying to do that for the bball games. The Toledo game was the first time that I've noticed that the announcer actually paused between announcing the opponent's starters' names so it could actually be said. I think though that until we can pack the student section again, it just won't be the same as it is in the Ice Arena.bgsufalcon24 wrote:Kaleena, I think the problem with "who's he? nobody!" at AA is that most students see it as a hockey tradition. I too feel that it's necessary for the marketing dept and/or athletic dept to advertise the games more than just a little ad in the BG News (or the "Whose He? Nobody!" full-page in the back of the paper). It's been mentioned before in relation to getting students to attend the football games, but if the dorms would do something that's as simple as putting ads on the entrance doors, it could at least remind some people that there's a game going on. But unless there's something such as a free t-shirt for the first 100 students or whatever, there isn't much else that can happen.
As far as changing the seats above where the A-Band sits in the South part, I think one reason the decision was made to make that the Half-Court club or whatever is because when tv crews shoot from the north end, there isn't an empty row there, plus it forces people to fill in the sides. As far as getting the A-Band to be more distracting when the opposition is shooting free throws, we do our best, not everyone wants to join in, but I've noticed that the university book store sells foam "fingers" in the shape of falcon claws. Maybe if we could somehow get a bunch of those for a discount it might help, but no, I don't plan on buying them myself, sorry guys.
In any case, I'll be at both the women's and men's bball games on Saturday with the A-Band
