HS Basketball, why I am so excited about BG's future
Please, please, please don't start retiring jerseys.
For one, there are a thousand ways to honor someone besides taking a perfectly good number out of circulation for future generations to use. As crazy as it sounds, many recruits base part of their college decision on the availibility of their pet number of choice. Who is deemed worthy of this honor is also highly subjective and opens up a pandora's box regarding the selection process and criteria. We have a BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame that negoriates through these political minefields every year anyway.
It's also a hokey ploy that can result in justifiable fan backlash when taken too far. For example, a brash new AD recently rode into Syracuse University and decided to retire practically every number ever worn by a successful Syracuse athlete. The fan base came to view these attemps as nothing more than slick marketing tricks designed to dwell on the past and much of the prestige sadly (for the honorees) wore off.
Maybe I'm too sensitive after seeing how miserably this was managed at Syracuse, but I still think it's something BGSU doesn't need to be focused on right now.

Just a warning... this is going to be a long post.
First and foremost, members of SICSIC devote three years of their life to the cause of building BG spirit, so the fact that you may have seen them only at "a few" basketball games, to me, means a lot more than you think it does. They give up a lot of their personal time, sometimes going through really difficult stuff, and go through the task of showing up at athletic events in jumpsuits and masks - very, very warm jumpsuits and masks - to get people excited.
And yes, SICSIC does get students excited. I know of plenty of students who 1) get very excited and make a lot of noise when they see SICSIC and, to a lesser extent 2) go to the games for SICSIC/F&F just as much as for the athletics.
Furthermore, SICSIC makes signs to promote athletic events and build anticipation for them, bringing awareness to students of what's going on around campus.
They do things other than athletics as well. This past summer for OREG, we had a SICSIC member or two show up at different times to help us get the incoming students pumped up at the dinner shows. They also make signs to promote various other campus happenings and raise the OVERALL spirit at BGSU - which is more than just athletics.
And no, I do not think it is entirely the spirit crews' (all of them, because they are a unit) fault that people aren't louder/more people don't show up, because there's only so much that two birds, 6 SICSIC members, the cheer/dance/twirler teams and the band can do. The marketing department could make more of an effort, the student leadership could make more of an effort, the administration could make more of an effort, and yes, the students themselves could get their acts together.
I say that, and do not pin it on the spirit crews because chances are if you're not willing to make the effort to go out to a game and yell, no "yellers" are going to get you involved either.
It takes an effort on all parts, and all parts are necessary. As someone who has worked in and alongside these spirit crews, to dismiss any of them on the 'hunch' that some other incarnation of a spirit group could do better is downright offensive.

SicSic doesn't draw fans, and I'm going to go on a limb and say neither do the birds (save the little ones). They may entertain those who are indifferent about being there, but no one goes to the game just to see the sprit groups. No one
Now, with that being said, should we just get rid of them? Hell no! I would agree that to an extent they do a good job of making it a move fun, lively atmosphere, but to say people go to the game to see them? thats a stretch and a half (again, save the beheading dates when people show up to see who they are and leave **cough**greek members**cough**)
A person like myself, or Globe, having them there means nothing to me. I'm watching a basketball game, maybe trying to get a piece of gum from ForF, and thats about all i care if they are there. To a person who doesn't care too much about the game, just something to do, sure they may care and watch some of their antics. But to honestly say people get out of their rooms and sit at a game for 2 hours to see SS or FandF is far fetched in my opinion..

I have family members that go to St. X. Its a different type of school, they go nuts for the Bombers in any sport! As a matter of fact, this was the first year in the last 10 or so they did not win the boys state swimming title, and everyone embraces the sports teams. Whats really cool from my point of view is that, while none of the three relatives of mine who go there play varsity sports, they all say that all the players have their heads on their shoulders and not up their asses and i feel like that is why they're so ready to cheer these guys on to victory.Globetrotter wrote:The atmosphere at the st x gme was amazing. back to the Chilicothe boys....
Back to the talk about Chambers and Hitchens from Chillicothe...
I heard several rumors flying around at the state tournament, one of them was Hitchens backing out of his commitment to Akron and putting on a Wisconsin Badgers jersey. If Akron manages to keep this kid, they are getting a STEAL!
I heard alot of Chambers-Dayton and Ohio talk....No BG talk! Bummer. Id love for us to get him. He works hard posting up and is realllllllly athletic!

Alright, this has devolved, partly my fault, so I'm going to let it drop after this. I can definitely tell you that even if you won't buy that people don't come to the games mostly for the spirit groups, I can assure you there are people who are there and enjoy the game, but would not be there if FF/SICSIC were not there. And I can absolutely guarantee you there are people that would NOT go to games if either of the mascot/spirit groups were eliminated or changed in such a way. I know you weren't arguing for that, but I'm just saying.cph2133 wrote:SicSic doesn't draw fans, and I'm going to go on a limb and say neither do the birds (save the little ones). Who said we should get rid of Freddie and Freida. And you are completely ignoring the point that I am not proposing that their absence goes unfilled. If you are going to do something why not do it well and make a bigger difference. SicSic needs to evolve. Its current schtick is outdated and unmotivational. What better way to respect the traditions of the past then to build on them and move forward and do things better?Peregrinner wrote:Alright, this has devolved, partly my fault, so I'm going to let it drop after this.
