MAC Play

Post by Metz »

On January 2nd we open up MAC play against Buffalo. All summer I heard they were going to have a great team this year. However, they have yet to beat any worthy oppenents in my opinion (their wins are against Fairleigh Dickinson, Indiana St, Colgate, Elon, Niagara). Three of those wins came in overtime. Their 2 losses are to Connecticut and Western Michigan. I didn't think they'd beat UConn but WMU I figured they had a good shot with but they lost by 17. Was all that summer hype untrue or is Buffalo really a good team? Chances are we will be 7-1 before we have to play them so to knock off our first MAC opponent would be huge in my opinion.

I feel we "should" beat Buffalo. There's no question they were a surprise team last year. I still think they'll be decent in the MAC, but playing them at home after the solid start to the season we have, I expect BG to win. We'll see.

the buff/BG game should be a real interesting one, IMO

true, we haven't played as great as the predictors would have you believe...but we've still only lost 2, and those to the defending natl champs and defending MAC champs, even though we shouldve given western a much better game.

beating niagara last week in double ot was a very good win, sellout crowd, playing against the #1 scorer in d-1. we should take care of canisius and then hopefully help the MAC OOC rankings by winning at penn st next week.

you guys are off to a real good start, but i think UB will show what the pre-season ranks were all about on jan 2nd. I'll hopefully make it out there for it.

How's your attendance been out there so far this season

Not so good, about 1,500 - 2,000 average per game. Keep in mind that there were some really low expectations for this team, so it will take a while for the fans to get turned on again. Two of our four home games were over Thanksgiving break and the students were out of town. A third game was against a Div III (?) team (Bluffton), but that was our biggest attended game thus far.

so you can start off your home MAC sched over break too :P

i hate that part of the scheduling...we get 2 of our biggest home MAC games over break too; toledo (knocked us out of tourney last yr) and miami.

our attendance has been pretty decent in comparison for once...we just renovated our arena, plus ppl actually have a good team to follow for once.
we've averaged around 4,000 for our 4 home games, including a 6,000 sellout last week vs niagara and around 4,000 for w. mich

also, our best game by far so far was over thanksgiving break vs indiana state, played in HSBC arena (where the sabres used to play :P), where we got 10,000 and trounced the sycamores by 30. so i think that's helped.

anyways, this season has the most expectation and fan support ever seen at UB, just be glad you guys dont have to play us in our place!!

Welcome UB Fan.

I always think we should win at home. But that will be a test for our team. Everytime we win, we find out a little bit more about how good we are. A win against Buffalo would show us something.

UB,
All I know is that the group you guys brought to Gund Arena last year was outstanding and easily the largest and most vocal fan group of all the teams I saw play.... Too bad a couple of your kids got "hauled away" for some excessive, shall we say imbibing? But, it WAS impressive to see that Sea of Blue in the seats. And welcome to AZZ...we're always happy to exchange ideas and thoughts with good fans.

hey thanks 61...

i was part of that group in cleveland, even though the "imbibing" i did was after the game, not during  (stupid MAC refs)

i was quite pleasantly surprised with our turnout at the gund last year, especially that we filled 3 buses with students for that 1 night trip, right before spring break no less. i guess when you give a school with 25,000 enrollment only 1 good team to follow, they'll get pretty excited about it.

i'm sure everyone here knows our recent football history, but take a look at this article from the buffalo news: http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20 ... 016835.asp

hopefully we can erase all that history tonight!

Best of luck tonight.

Battle could give us fits, he's a fine player. OTOH, we handled the big guys from UIC and Bradley....

I'm looking forward to MAC play starting.
