Good luck to "Anderson Animals"

Post by SidelineSquad02 »

Class of 2002 here and one of the originators of the Sideline Squad, what ever Matthew P. Lyons says. Not sure who that cat is...

To clear up a few things:
1. We were NEVER, EVER frat guys. In fact, we were anti-frat guys. Sorry if we gave off that impression. We're really sorry.

2. We LOVE the game of basketball. The reason we started the Sideline Squad (which I think is a catchy name) is because we enjoyed going to the games, acting stupid and wanted to get a student section going like the bigger programs have (i.e. Duke, Michigan State). I think we succeeded on that.

3. We have all since graduated and left the Sideline Squad to, well, people less responsible and it fizzled. That sucks, but then again, we all had the real world to start and bigger problems to attend to.

We are all still close friends and talk on a consistent basis, whether our jobs have taken us across the state or across the country. But being in the Sideline Squad and going to games 2-3 hours early, tailgating in the Jerome Library and catching a glance at the cheerleaders during timeouts, were all fond memories and some of the best of our college experience.

For those of you that enjoyed the passion and stupid antics we brought to each home game, thanks. Those of you that hated us, probably jealous you didn't think of it sooner and we're sorry if we offended anyone.

Good luck to the Anderson Animals and I think I would like to get to a home game this year and check out the team, the Anderson Animals and of course the cheerleaders.

hey sidelinesquad02, Myself, along with a student tour coordinator by the name of Angie were a part of a group called the sideline squad in 2000. I was around that year and then was not able to be as active in 2001. So, maybe the group disbanded and was started up again in 2002 by you guys. I just presumed the group was maintained. If not, my apologies. But, I was an originating member of a group called the Sideline Squad in 2000. Anyway, when you get in town for a game let me know. We can show the kids how it's done.

Matt:

I was also a Student Tour Coordinator for two years... your name now sounds familiar.

Anyway, the Sideline Squad gathered in 1998 (our freshman year) but really got going in 1999 (when we wore the black T-shirts) by the origional members (myself included) until most of us graduated after the 2001-2002 basketball season..

When you threw out the name Angie, the Falcon Spirit Team came to mind. Me and my other buddy attended meetings before the 1999-2000 season to see what the FST could do for the Sideline Squad bringing it to the entire student body.

Unfortunately, the FST was not much help. But as for you claiming you started Sideline Squad in 2000 is false. Not trying to be an asshole, just setting the record straight. I do remember throwing out mini basketball balls, but that's about it.

Once we got involved with the BGSU Sports Information and Marketing department, we were able to get T-shirts to the student body and started the Hoops 'n Halloween with coach Dakich as a sort of Midnight Madness type thing.

Once again, not trying to be an asshole, but I just want to set the record straight.

If I'm not mistaken, the 2001-02 season was the year I did a feature on the 'Sideline Squad' for Falcon Basketball with Dan Dakich.

I interviewed a few of the guys who claimed to be the founders for the piece and shot some footage of them during a game.

If memory serves correctly, there were some orange Sideline Squad shirts that season. I could be wrong though, I didn't keep any of the stories I did for the Basketball show that season, just the ones I did for Urban's show.

I'm wearing an orange sideline squad shirt right now! They were handed out to anyone and everyone in the student section. There was also a white one a year earlier I think.
