Wayne State
Re: Wayne State
Not sure how good Michigan is supposed to be this year, but they only beat Wayne State by 19 73-54. Would have liked to see Calhoun earlier in the rotation as he only got in the game in the last couple of minutes.

Yeah, Calhoun sat until just over 2 minutes were left. What was that all about? Is he just coming off of the flu, or what? If anybody knows anything, please impart.

Looks like Haynes is Redshirting per the weekly notes
Re: Wayne State
Was so nice to get back to Anderson Arena...or the "Double A" as our awesome marketing guy wants to call it. Hey marketing guy, if you're reading this, pay attention. You cannot assign a new nickname to a 50+ year old venue!
My butt is not yet in mid season Anderson Arena form, but it was still great to get there and watch a game again
I thought Crawford looked TINY and FAST. He got some good playing time and did some good things. Made one or two nice steals, and a few nice passes. He's small, but looks like one of the quickest guys we've had here in awhile.
McElroy was impressive as well. I was stunned when he stepped out and hit a couple long jumpers (I think they were just inside 3 range?). For a big guy he actually looked very comfortable and had a nice looking jump shot. He didn't get many opportunities in the paint, but that will probably change.
OP looks even more slimmed down and showed some nice athleticism on a few dunks. Hey transfer, during pregame introductions, you think they could let you slip in something like "BGSU's all time leader in blocked shots"? Might make for a nice tribute for his senior year.
Scott Thomas looked good. Made a couple long balls. Was hitting the glass pretty hard. I think he is a candidate to have a breakout year and lead the team in scoring.
Goins did some nice things as well. He had one very nice drive to the basket. He also went up high and did a great job controlling and scoring on an overthrown lob pass on a break (I think it was from Crawford, may have been Brown). His jumper looks to be a work in progress though. He made a 3 that looked very nice, but a couple of the other shots he fired just looked UGLY. Like his hand must have gone off to the side or something...the ball was spinning sideways.
I was also disappointed to not see Calhoun until so late in the contest...hope he works hard and gets in the coach's good graces. He didn't really show much in the little time he got, so still not sure what we have in him.
All in all, it was just great to get back to Anderson. I definitely think that between Goins, McElroy, Crawford, Brown, and a slimmed down OP this team is far more athletic than any we've put on the floor in the recent past. There definitely looks to be some talented young players on this team, it's going to be fun to watch them develop and come together.

Re: Wayne State
What hammb said, with this added: Our most improved player could be Mark Larson. I really liked what I saw out of him. He caught difficult interior passes and rebounded in traffic. Also, he had a beautiful post move on the baseline that resulted in a reverse layup.
Crawford and McElroy looked very good. Those two like as good as any freshmen we've had in a VERY long time.
Not know what's up with Calhoun is driving me nuts. He is "pound for pound the best player on our team" and will be a "big part of our rotation", to quote Orr. I'm tempted to get Orr's home phone number and call him to ask him what's up?

Tough to draw conclusions from an exhibition game, but Michigan looks like a serious B11 contender, and is ranked 15th in the country to start the year.

I'm still waiting for a response from hammb about this. Not going to lie, I was quite disappointed not to see Larson mentioned in his game critique!BleedOrange wrote:What hammb said, with this added: Our most improved player could be Mark Larson. meh
There was a minute stretch there where Larson looked like an actual basketball player getting a rebound then the nice post move that BleedOrange mentioned. Of course he still had a bunch of stupid fouls and completely blew a wide open 2 handed dunk.
If Larson starts to play well against D1 competition maybe I'll give him some props, but he's still not my favorite player.

Re: Wayne State
First off, I've decided to quit my job search after 6 months of unemployment and become a full-time 50-50 winner. I will follow BGSU sports teams to venues far and wide and just win the 50-50 drawing at each one. Beats a life of crime....
The game was fun. Just being back in Anderson felt "right," some of you know exactly what I mean...
I was a little surprised, as others have mentioned, at the lack of playing time from "The Apostrophe." I'm confident that as the season progresses, we'll see more and more of "'", and we'll like what we see! Why am I confident?? Because. And that should be enough of a reason for you to be confident as well.
I still think the middle-to-bottom-of-the-pack predictions are way off. I think we'll be challenging for the MAC championship come February.
I think Otis will eat up every other center in the league. Eat them up, spit out their bones, and then assemble them into a xylophone of some sort upon which he'll play Ay Ziggy Zoomba! He's leaner, he seems to have more of a "Shove it down their throats" attitude, and he's a Sr. Granted, this was one game against a DII opponent, but remember what I said above, "why am I confident? Because."
Xavier game will be on FoxSportsCinci on Tuesday night... and the Iowa game will be covered by BTN in some capacity... not sure if it'll be on air on just online, but we'll be able to catch the Falcons on the road this week.
OH... and back the Anderson Arena amps back from 11 to about 8, OK?? Ears were bleeding after intros....

I missed that one about you winning. That's what happens when they don't give me the announcement because I would have had some fun with that one.ZiggyZoomba wrote:First off, I've decided to quit my job search after 6 months of unemployment and become a full-time 50-50 winner. And if you can still hear, then the amps were no way near loud enough.

Yikes! I totally agree! We sat near one of the speaker systems and it was painful.ZiggyZoomba wrote:

Amps too LOUD? I could actually understand him upstairs near the top for once. I figured with 2 seasons left they actually got it right. I was simply happy to understand him and the promo guy. Usually its too distorted for me.
On the atmosphere side I missed the band. The recorded music (fight song and such) will never sound as good as the band. Plus the empty seats on that end look terrible.
