WANTED: Player(s) who can score points, please

Post by BGSU33 »

This team is BADLY in need of a player or two who can consistently score the basketball. I know we preach defense and are all about defending the opponent (and we do a decent job of it, IMO), but at some point, you still need to score some points out there. That’s the name of the game - outscore the opponent - and the team with more points always wins the game, period. What’s more, and I'm trying to be kind with my words, but watching this team try to run something offensively at times can be just downright painful. That might sound harsh, but I know I am not alone when I say that. I have watched us numerous times in person this year and I don’t think I can ever remember seeing a BG team make scoring a basket look this difficult.

Adding to that well put point is the fact that we only substitute Larson and Crawford from our bench. Where is the development and if we don't play some of these freshmen then why not red-shirt them? They are wasting away never taking their warm up jacket off.

Couldn't agree more, and I've said as much a number of times this year. This team badly needs to recruit a true scorer. The only guys we have that score with any consistency are Dee Brown & Scott Thomas, and neither of them are guys that can really get their own shot when they need/want to.

Defense is well and good, but we really need to grab a kid or two that are talented offensive players and we can let them develop some defense, because our offensive talent is really lacking.

As to the offense being painful to watch, absolutely in agreement. Even when we win this team is not enjoyable to watch. That UT game the other night was just brutal to watch. I've missed more home games this year than I have in years, and I really don't feel compelled to go out of my way to make it to any more games. The highlight of the games is hanging out with friends, the game on the court itself is just not enticing.

The other way to look at it is that it is pretty amazing that we have won as many games as we have with the talent we run out on the floor each night.

Weren't Calhoun and McElroy brought in as scorers? It would have been nice to see the two of them progress through the year, along with Thomas and Brown. We all had a hunch this year would be more difficult after losing the guards and Miller last year. A modicum of patience is required still.

FWIW, they don't give extra on the scoreboard for style points. Any game where Bowling Green finishes with 1 point or more than the other guys is fun to watch.

Heh. You said "jacket off."

That was rough to watch tonight. We just had little or no flow, made some nice plays but made more than a few head-scratchers. Typical MAC officiating on both sides of the ball. Both a game we should have won and a game we should have lost by 20 all rolled into one.

Worthen Arena may look pretty, but man is that an annoying place to watch a game. Anyone in the "Stroh needs 10,000 seats" camp needs to go to a Balls Tate game. Blech.

Story of the night, as we're walking in, an older female came up to us at the ticket window, said "Don't buy tickets, just use these. We have two extra that we don't need." I turn to her, in my orange hoodie, and say "How much do you want for them?" out of courtesy, to which she replies. "Oh, are you for Bowling Green? Nevermind then." And turned and walked away, I don't think she even gave the tickets to anyone.

A little taste of Hoosier hospitality. Funny and sad at the same time.

I was actually thinking about that as well, because surprisingly (or I guess I should say not surprisingly), we haven't scratched 60 points in 11 of our 21 games this season!!! For the record, we went 4-7 in those contests. I do think McElroy is going to be a solid contributor offensively down the road (if he's back) and that Calhoun can be a scorer (if he ever gets on the floor). I do like the strides Thomas & Brown have made this year, but we're still missing a lot on offense to be desired. We just bog down so much sometimes offensively to the point where it seems like the five guys on the floor (no matter who they are) don't know who or how they are going to score, just like those of us in the stands are wondering.

This is a totally different team if they would have had both Chris Knight and the Graves kid that was transfering from Xavier University. Both of those guys would have been scorers. Well they did make grades. Is that a requirement? Must be.

Last tiem I went to BSU for football I had some extra tix- tried to give them to a dad with two kids in BSU gear and was nearly arrested. Some law about giving tix away. Crazy. Told the guy in front of the cops that I'd just throw them away "in that trash can right over there, right on top where just anybody could find them". Cops made no effort to stop the guy from picking them up out of the trash. Those folks on MCGalliard are crazy.

I think the answer to this for our scoring was simple..we were counting on Knight and Calhoun. Add those 2 to our team and we are set. Whose fault? Who knows. That is our answer to why we have trouble scoring.

This is not to be a negative because I believe defense wins.

Isn't part of the reason Seton Hall fans (the ones of influence) were less than upset to see Coach Orr depart was the fact they played a defense based game that lacked the pop on the offensive end?

The benefit of good defense is the record considering the lack of offense. Imagine where our Falcons could go when Coach Orr develops 3 or 4 offensive weapons who buy into the concept of defense and rebounding. I hope we can see the combination in the near future but meanwhile these Falcons play hard and make me proud.
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

When I went up for the football game in the fall, I had a buy one/get one free coupon for GA seats. Since I went alone, I gave it to a Ball State fan at the next ticket window over who I heard order 6 or so GA seats. Here I thought karma was coming back to me, but I guess Falcons are nicer than Cardinals.
