There is no excuse

Post by DustinXtreme »

why Anderson Arena shouldn't be packed or nearly packed and why more people shouldn't stand up and get loud and cheer the falcons on! i understand that some people may not be able to stand up, but there a lot of people that can stand up but they don't,instead they sit on their butts and do nothing and about the only time they ever stand up is for the national anthem and maybe for the last minute in the game.
STAND UP ! and Cheer the Falcons on. :!:

Dustin-

With all due respect, buddy, we get it. You want people to stand up. You're not going to win this battle by posting about it repeatedly on Ay Ziggy Zoomba. We've seen the posts and had the discussions before, and everything's the same. I admire your persistence and your willingness to stand and cheer, but it's time to let this one go, as far as these topics go. From now on, we'll all assume you feel this way, and we can move on and discuss other subjects.

I've been lamenting that very thing for soooo long. I have yet to find an answer.

Keep standing and yelling. Encourage those around you to do the same. That's all a simple man can do.

Just a heads up- I know you guys have Valpo for your BB opponent this week, which means you'll be playing up there next year. If any of you make the trip, expect to be met with resistance. I traveled to Valpo with some buddies two years ago. We were on the upper deck and were standing by the rail holding signs. The event staff told us we couldn't stand there because we were blocking the view. Fair enough. We asked if we could do so at our seats and were told it was not a problem. Well, lo and behold, Miami makes a comeback and sends the game into OT (and utimately 2OT). We were standing and cheering on our team for the whole game, and it wasn't an issue until toward the end. We were told we had to sit. We informed the member of the event staff that we were told we could stand, but he didn't seem to care. So we humored him until he walked away, and then resumed standing and cheering. Well, he saw us again, AND CAME BACK WITH SECURITY! We came very close to getting tossed. What a joke.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall EVER reading anything on a ticket that guarantees a fan the right to stand in front of others and block their view. You purchase a seat, unless it is a standing room only section. Don't give me that crap about the BG athletics staff not allowing people to stand in Anderson Arena. I remember more than a few times where those who were seated in the upper section right above the student section were all but told to go to hell when they couldn't see the game. Hopefully the Stroh Center will address some of the design flaws and obstructed seats will be eliminated. Standing has its time and place throughout the game, but you purchase a seat, not floor space.

FWIW,
Last year at the MAC tournament, a couple of UT fans for some inexplicable reason sat down in the BG section, not quite directly in front of US, but definitely in front of some other folks... Before the game started, they stood up at their seats, blocking people's view of the floor... several BG folks complained, asked them to sit down so they could see. The response?.... "we don't sit down until our team scores" or something like that.... this led to an argument that threatened to escalate into physical contact... an usher came over, we assumed to get things under control...don't know what the UT couple said to him, but he began to walk away. When the BG folks questioned him, he said , "they have the right to stand" (or similar)... Things REALLY began to heat up , and he finally asked the couple to move their seats...which they finally did..

Point of all this? Some people like the idea of standing and rooting for their team...typical if you're in the student section...but other folks can cheer just as much without the need to stand all the time.... Pick your spot to stand, where it doesn't involve blocking off someone's view of the game.

I wonder if we eliminate 500-1,000 chair seats in the Stroh and made the area into standing platforms if the savings could translate into a bigger video screen?

We haven't seen the size of the video board yet!!!!! From the drawings I have seen we will not have a scoreboard hanging over the court. Can anyone confirm that? If that is the case then I would suggest moving the board from Doyt Perry Stadium to the Stroh Center and purchase a bigger board for the stadium. I doubt that is possible, but it's a fun option to think about... :-D

I want bigger and better for the Stroh. My thought is minimum 10 MBB, 10 WBB, 10 VB, 6 HS BB, 2 or 3 graduations, 1 week of Boys State, and many other events at the Stroh. The Doyt gets 6 FB, 5 HS FB and very little else. Better investment would be inside the Stroh for many events. Get 2 big ones for each end that are high quality and worry about the football field later.

I see all points as valid. Anderson Arena could be a really difficult place to win, especially if the fans occupying the bleachers stood and cheered more. Instead, most of the fans attending BG games appear comatose. That's their prerogative. The general performance of the men's team is also a factor.

That ability to have a potential effect on the game by being so close to the floor will most assuredly be lost at the Stroh Cente. But then, it was never really in place at Anderson due to obstinance.

Some people physically can't stand for very long because of bad legs or back. I understand both sides to this story. Continue on..................
