Technically, that is incorrect as pointed out in The Blade story. Chauncey will not sign a letter of intent, but will receive a tuition waiver as the son of a university employee.

Actually you can sign a NLI, but if you're not receiving a scholarship it is only a formality. Football preferred walkons often sign NLI's just to make them feel part of the team, but are meaningless. The article was incorrect in saying coach couldn't comment because a NLI wasn't signed. I believe that the official spring signing period is over, so if a player signed one now, it would not be enforceable if he wanted to back out.

Orr has about as much chance of getting the scholarship as you or I do.

Why would you give him one of your precious few scholarships when he already gets free tuition?

I was thinking the same thing Hammb.

Article in the Blade says the scholarship could go to Orr. I questioned it on Twitter but haven't received a response yet.

The free tuition for faculty member is just that FREE tuition ONLY. It does not cover books, room and board, meals or living expense If he were on a scholarship he would get free room and board, meals, etc.

Ah...I did not know that.

I still think it'd be foolish to give him the scholarship. He gets free tuition and his father is making 6 figures which could easily pay for Chauncey's books & boarding. If it were me I'd take advantage of that built in bonus of him being the coach's kid and use the schollie elsewhere.

But I guess they didn't ask me.

Actually, that is not true. If the student is eligible for an academic scholarship, then they may use a portion of the waiver for their room and board.

What you described is how it is supposed to be, but not the actual practice right now.

Why does Chauncey need money for room and board when he lives in BG?

Any freshman member of a sports team needs to live with his teammates. That is how they build the comaraderie needed for a successful team!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

FWIW, Joplin was just hired as the basketball coach at Springfield High School.
