Detroit observations

Post by BleedOrange »

1. Craig Sealey needs to be on the floor as much as possible. Period. Thank you. Next.

2. I'm baffled as to why Black is getting so much time ahead of Oglesby. Black was very unimpressive tonight. Clumsy, bad hands, slow footwork, weak, and very slow to the ball.

3. A team has a winning season because it has guards that have the will and ability to make things happen down the stretch. If anybody, that person is clearly Crawford and not Brown.

4. Thomas was incredibly quick and instinctive on defense tonight. Very impressive.

5. Erger got some minutes in the second half and scored twice, and looked tough in the process. He stuck a 24 footer that was beautiful.

6. Perhaps Calhoun should take a handful of No-Doz before games.

I thought Brown looked incredible tonight. Like he could run the point pretty well. Crawford was clearly pressing and did not look good. I like him a great deal and think when he relaxes he will be better.

As for Black I thought he was excellent. He took up space and was a real presence in the middle. Something we don't get from anyone else. Oglesby had 3 fouls in 3 minutes

I thought Black looked good tonight. He's improving and only a Soph. Sealey is quickly becoming a player on this team and Crawford is fun to watch. We have the makings of a solid team.

I thought Brown looked good at point guard in the Georgia game. The second half rally came with him at the position.

After listening to Coach Orr's post-game interview, I picked up on a couple of things that he said that I totally agree with. 2 words....chemistry and maturity. These things were lacking last year and I truly feel that this is where our strength will come from this year as we continue to prove the prognosticators wrong. I think we are witnessing what a team can do when they believe in each other, and believe in themselves. Sure, there are times where you wish that certain players hadn't tried to make the play that might show up on ESPN, but those, hopefully will be few and far between. It's great to see guys make shots and when you shoot with confidence, knowing that the ball is going in and not hoping it goes in, everyone feeds off that. Seemed as though last night was a tale of two halves....we hit a stretch where we didn't look confident at the offensive end and maybe didn't look forward to getting there, and then in the second half we started making some shots and we couldn't wait to get back to the offensive end because we wanted to see who was going to make the next shot. I am truly looking forward to witnessing the journey this team takes this year because I really do believe they can have a special year.

Now...do I think Jordan is our true point guard? Yes. Do I think that Dee gives us something different when he plays the point and gives Jordan a rest? Yes. Do I see an improvement in Cam Black's game? Yes, we are seeing him make some nice moves at the offensive end that I know we never saw last year. He's not going to be a force, yet, but he doesn't have to be. One thing I think these players are starting to understand is that you don't have to all be stars. Just play your role to the best of your ability. If they can do that, they will be successful and a joy to watch.

Just read the preseason outlook on Detroit and they were picked 2nd in the Horizon League behind Butler, one spot in front of a very solid Cleveland State team. The Titans also had 3 guys on the All-HL preseason 1st team as well as the Preseason POTY in McCallum. This is no slouch of a team...and Austin Peay was picked to win the OVC. These are quality wins, at least early on.

GW will be another good test having beaten UD by 13 and APSU by 2. Their only loss was at #24 Cal, 81-54.

I think I ready something that the Falcons were 7-7 down the stretch from the free throw line...HUGE difference from last year. In 2010-11, we would have ended up losing this game by 1 or 2 because of our inability to hit from the charity stripe. Keep working on those free throws!!!

Oglesby really has struggled defensively the last two nights We have seen Black more because he has been the better low post defender. I also like how Erger gives great effort defensively in the post despite being grossly undersized for the position (although we are listing him at 6'7" this year).

One thing that I'm SHOCKED that hasn't been posted on here yet is that JORDON CRAWFORD WON US THE GAME LAST NIGHT. Don't believe me? Re-watch the last 2 minutes of the game. He guarded the heck out of McCallum, forced him into two turnovers AND beat him off the dribble twice that lead to a foul and an easy basket. Coach Orr gave him a big ol hug immediately after the final buzzer. GREAT to see him step up, be a leader and outplay the other team's (and confrence's) best player down the stretch!!

Crawford did that anytime he was in the game guarding McCallum. He was a real PITA for him.
