I guess if pro teams in Detroit let the fans onto the playing area after championships, there would be no riots because they will have satisfied letting out "2 hours of excitement." You would be better off letting off your excitement by trashing your own apartment or dorm room.BGDrew wrote:The students coming on to the court are congratulating the team and letting 2 hours of excitement out. Yeah, it sucks he got hurt, but don't act like this is some new thing when fans come on to the playing surface. There were fans coming on to the field in the old 40s Notre Dame film.ZiggyZoomba wrote:
Like I said guys, it was an accident. If you restrain the students, they'll probably just say screw it and not even come out.
Let me paint this scenario for you. BG wins. Crowd rushes floor. Instead of being jumped on and bruising a knee, Germain Fitch is fatally stabbed. Think about this and don't give me this crap about a student would never do this. Will everyone be saying don't let one person spoil it for everyone then?
This is a different world than 1940's Notre Dame football. I am stunned to see that so many posters on this website are so blind to this because they feel they have a right to celebrate with the team. You are a fan, not a player. In today's world, the risks are too big for common sense to prevail.
Great post. I personally am sick of seeing fans rush the floor and players. If you are actually dumb enough to think that lining the floor with police officers will work, think again. It might stop the rush initially, but there are always the dumb few who will go for it anyways. Besides, that would just start a new complaint that people were unable to see the game because a cop was in their way.

I've been struggling with this issue since it happened, trying to form an opinion. I've never been part of a floor or field "rush" after a game, I'm content to stay where I'm at and cheer and watch the excitement and emotion from there.BGorDeath wrote:I am stunned to see that so many posters on this website are so blind to this because they feel they have a right to celebrate with the team.
I do think it's dangerous for player and fan. Look at the incident at UT a couple years back where the girl got konked by a goal-post. And with Germain's injury it's now happened at BG. But that being said, I've been coming to BG basketball games for almost 30 years and this is the first time there has ever been any kind of negative impact because of a fan celebration!
To say we don't have the right to celebrate with the team is to say don't come out to the game and cheer. That's what the game is all about, sports is empathy. You feel what the team feels to some extent, why else would you go to games? I may be reading your post too literally and you just mean fans don't have the right to celebrate with the team ON THE FLOOR AFTER THE GAME.
I don't know what the solution is... I'm not sure there needs to be a solution because I'm not convinced there's a problem. I think common sense is the key... unfortunately that seems to be lacking from so many aspects of society anymore that you can't count on it.
I just don't want to see any "sterilization" of the atmosphere that surrounds BGSU basketball. The team egging the fans on to cheer louder with their arms, Dakich pumping his fist and high-fiving players and encouraging the crowd...that's all part of BGSU hoops and what gives us such a great home-court advantage. For the fans to just turn that enthusiasm off when the buzzer sounds is unrealistic. I can see how a floor rush is cathartic... all that emotion built up over 40 minutes of battle comes to a head. But jumping on a player, that's just a lack of common sense.
It'll be interesting to see how the "issue" is addressed, if at all.

Yes, I am saying that the fans do not have the right to celebrate on the floor after the game. I don't want to see the sterilization of AA either. I want to see common sense, which I, personally, do not ever see prevailing.ZiggyZoomba wrote:I've been struggling with this issue since it happened, trying to form an opinion. Not with the cops that were there the other night. They were all short but as we saw, very fast, too!bgfanwisc wrote:Besides, that would just start a new complaint that people were unable to see the game because a cop was in their way.

And imagine what kind of environment anderson would be if cops lined the student section making sure no one attempted to get on the floor. Remember how dead the student section was when the cops came over for the WMU game?
If someone wanted to stab a player bad enough, they'll do it. I thought it was funny that I was searched at the football game but not even given a glance at AA. If security is an issue, start searching people as they come through the turnstiles.
Remember, this is one freak occurance. If this had been a 20 point blow out against OU, no one would be running to the team to celebrate. It was our rival in one of the greatest comebacks BG has ever seen. Fans got excited.
