Scott Thomas was named first team All league and forward of the year in the Germany ProA League which from my knowledge (which I admit isn't much about euro basketball) is traditionally one of the top leagues in Europe. I believe he averaged around 21ppg.
I can't help but think his talent was wasted at BG. He was a good player for us but a mixture of the staff, dreadful offense, and personnel around him the Falcons never got out of Scott what they could have, I foresee us saying the same thing about Calhoun next year when he has a great first season as a pro. While I do believe a player can get better year to year, I find it extremely hard to believe Scott is THAT much better than when he left year. Unfortunate we couldn't accomplish more while he was here but bet of luck to him in the future and hopeful he has a great pro career!

To what extent is Thomas's success a bad reflection on Orr? That's a good question. One could argue that it's a good reflection on Orr, but I'm not one to make that argument. No doubt, the lack of good guards while Thomas was here held him back.
I expect to read about Calhoun, Holmes, and Sealey as well. I'd be interested to learn about how some of the other Orr grads have done overseas.

Thomas finished in the all time numbers at like 4-5 different stat groups. I don't think there is an argument that anything but his lack of athleticism held him back.

I don't believe Thomas lacked athleticism. He was hurt by guards that were slow, couldn't run offenses, and made bad decisions.

Re: Scott Thomas 1st Team All League
Scott Thomas is a tremendous BG success story. Great kid and a graduate. He is one of the real Louis Orr success stories- and recently we have had very very few. Thomas was identified and evaluated early by the staff and signed as smaller school serious scorer w limitations in ball handling and defense. He overcame those supposed limitations and became a very fine player. A player any team in the league would have wanted in their top six in all four of his years.
As posters have pointed out, he finished high in many BG career categories and I believe he benefited from our coaching staff.
The problem is not whether we got all we could from Scott Thomas; I believe we did. The problem is we need to sign coachable difference makers in every single class and then develop them- a couple in every class. Every class and more than one.
That is how you win. They can be HS players, transfers, JC's. Whatever. But there must be coachable difference makers in every class who can help you win the MAC. If you do not sign enough of those student-athletes- for whatever reason- you will not win the MAC. Or even win in the MAC.
Go Falcons!

We need to sign and keep difference makers in every class....and we need to use all of our scholarships.
