The Old Barn...

Post by Rollo83 »

Every time I log into this site and is see the image of Anderson Arena behind the "under construction" message, I realize how much I miss the old place. Don't get me wrong, I know we needed a new building but there was something really special about AA. It just felt like a basketball arena. So many great high school and college basketball memories there.

I just wish we could of captured some of that in our new building...but unfortunately we didn't.

I too loved Anderson Arena. Great building. But I just watched five or six high school tourney games at Stroh Center. These games or sets of games showed me that the Stroh Center can "hold" or help create an incredible basketball environment. These games were loud. The fans were engaged. The seats were, largely, filled. I talked to family after family who loved the building- win or lose- as a basketball venue. Sight lines, concourse, video board, etc. Great exposure for BGSU by the way.

As a University, we need our men's basketball program to lead us back or into that scenario.Stroh Center is a potential huge advantage. But we must get the fans there. (Our women's team has done a better overall job here given their game's current interest level vs the men's game nationally.) The most important variable in that men's situation is WINNING. We need a great coach and staff who can RECRUIT. Recruiting is absolutely the key. When we have players and we win, we will build an advantage in the building. Marketing, outreach, partnerships, connection by the new staff etc can be all very helpful in selling tickets

But we need players. When they are in uniform and well coached, we will win. And Stroh Center will create its own memories.

Go Falcons!

I don't think we can judge the Stroh until we start playing in front of people there

Good point! That probably would help...

The UT game this year gave us all a glimpse if what an exciting venue the Stroh can be when the product performs and the students show up. The UT game in 2012 and the MSU game were great, but the student crowd was the X factor this year. That was the first time I felt as if I was really getting a true college basketball experience for my season ticket. That experience is what I'm hoping for with the right man leading the program. I'm optimistic that coach Jan's is that man !
