Ohio U
Re: Ohio U
Their candidate list closely mirrors our own of a few weeks ago: Jeff Boals, LaVall Jordan, etc...
Their coach left a lower tier BCS job for OU, stayed just 2 years only to take another lower tier BCS job where he'll be competing against the likes of Duke, North Carolina and Syracuse. Most OU fans seem pleased to get a fresh start after not making the tournament the past couple years.

First off, congrats on the Jans hire. I think he is going to be a very good coach.
Ohio officially hired Saul Phillips from North Dakota State last night. 5 years 550k/year (per ESPN). Ever since Groce left, Shaus (Ohio AD) has said he wants someone with previous head coaching experience. That's why Ohio alums like Jeff Boals and Dustin Ford, or even former assisants at the school like Bacari Alexander, didn't get closer looks.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Re: Ohio U
Take a look at OU's board today, most of them certainly feel they actually got a better coach than the one they just lost. As for them deserving better, they certainly seemed to believe they have it better right now.zete wrote:Three coaches in three years......their fans deserve better.
Ohio's turnover comes from OU having much success, not because they are a bad program and guys are being fired. In that three-year time frame Ohio won the MAC Tournament and went all the way to the Sweet 16 in Groce's last year there, they played in the MAC Championship and went to the NIT last year, then this year they won two games in the CIT. Ohio has done more in the last three years alone (MAC Tournament title, two wins in the NCAA Tournament, two home wins in a postseason tournament) than BG has done in it's history as BG has never won a MAC Tournament, has only won one NCAA Tournament game and has never hosted let alone even won a home postseason home game. It's pretty safe to say that Ohio and Akron have owned the MAC recently winning the tournament title between the two of them over the last 5 or 6 year before this season, but Ohio blows even Akron out of the water in NCAA success as the Zips lost each of their first round games while Ohio beat Georgetown to advance to the Round of 32 then two years later beat Michigan and USF to get to the Sweet 16 where they barely lost to North Carolina.
Yes, I agree that's a lot of coaches in a short time, but it would be like if BG football wins the MAC Championship again this year and then wins a bowl game this upcoming season and we lost Babers to another school. I doubt many outside of us BG fans would feel bad or think we deserved better.
GO BG!!!
Re: Ohio U
Speaking of Ohio, something I am going to keep a close eye on is the success between these two new coaches that BG (Jans) and OU (Phillips) both hired. Especially considering BG hired its coach first (meaning Phillips was on the table). OU certainly paid Phillips really well to come to Athens but even BG could have doubled his previous salary as Phillips was making about what Orr was. To be clear, I am not - I repeat - NOT, saying BG should have hired Phillips over Jans, or Jans over Phillips. I have no idea how either one will pan out. What I am saying is OU's AD's have a proven track record of hiring coaches Ohio who recruited good players and built good teams that won the MAC Championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. BG has misfired and is coming of a debacle-of-a-hire in Louis Orr. I really, really, really hope Jans was THE hire to make us MAC Tournament champs and gets us to the NCAA Tournament.

Re: Ohio U
In all fairness though...the person who hired and extended Orr is...as Earnie Harwell used to say...Looooooooooooong gone. So we really can't ake a coparsion using hiring track records. Kingston's tenure as AD is likely going to be defined by his first two hires. He's had the good fortune of getting to call his shots for the top two programs on campus within his first year on the job.
The next 12-24 months are going to be interesting to say the least

Re: Ohio U
Ohio U and BG are at two different positions. One simply wants to continue with a very good trend and the other has to build a team, student body support and fan/local/alum support. These two school are most likely not looking at the exact same candidates based on the current condition of their programs. Different personalities are needed at each school.

Actually, we BG fans deserve better. At least OU contends every year despite the coaching changes. We couldn't find our way out of a tunnel with skylights the last 7 years.zete wrote:Three coaches in three years......their fans deserve better.

Re: Ohio U
I'm biased but I like the Jans hire more. An Ohio writer even listed him as a candidate for the job not realizing he'd already been hired by BG.
Their AD likes head coaches more than assistants and on paper it's the safer bet, but you'd have to think Jeff Boals (Ohio State) would have excited their fan base more than Saul Phillips (North Dakota State).

BTW, Christian and the Boston College athletic department are using the Twitter hashtag #WeAreBC. Was there some sort of seminar that people went to where that slogan was recommended?

Re: Ohio U
Apparently Jason Kemp from Toledo is now on the Ohio staff. He worked for Phillips at North Dakota State.
