BGSU Media Love

Post by shock »

I hope you guys don't mind me joining in the conversation. I'm just super stoked about BGSU.
This is a really good article. Well worth the read. I think it's just the start of the media love that's going to pour in.
Bowling Green needed a boost to operate like a Gonzaga or a Wichita State, the mid-major schools that have near-major basketball commitments. Wichita State’s basketball expenses in 2012-13 exceeded $5.3 million per U.S. Department of Education data, for example, while Bowling Green’s were less than $1.5 million. But it should have more resources, and it should have a coach who comes off a seven-year tutorial on how to maximize them.
“That’s the goal,” Jans said. “I can’t sit here and tell you that’s the end-all, is to try to replicate what we did at Wichita State, but it’s certainly something to shoot for. If we’re focused and have that mentality that we’re getting there every day and get the right student-athletes in our program, and we shoot for goals like that, the final results will be pretty darn good and everyone in the program will be happy with results and where the program is going.”

Shock,
I'd say that you're more than welcome to join in. You would obviously know much more about coach Jans than any of us, but I think you can see already how hyped up we are about a program that's been pretty much dead in the water far too long.
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)

Good read, Shock. I am thoroughly pleased with our new football and basketball coaches, and both have received flattering articles from SI. I'll take that any day.

AKA, making the NCAA's for us would be the equivalent of making the Final Four for others. Sounds about right, but I wouldn't rule out a Ohio/BG Women's-type Sweet 16 run as a goal to shoot for.

HCCJ is not only a fantastic coach and recruiter, he is a great man and a wonderful ambassador to whatever school he works for. He would be #1 on my list to replace Marshall. Lucky for all of us, we don't need to worry about that for the next 4-6 years! Roll along!
All coaches are thieves. I’m no different. We’re certainly going to steal, slash, borrow the blueprint we created at Wichita State and try to implement it at BG. Our floor model will be similar to how we played at Wichita State. Our recruiting model will be similar, but not quite the same because I feel like we’re in a location within a four-and-a-half hour radius where you can drive to places like Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Akron, Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh. Where in Wichita, we weren’t afforded those fertile recruiting grounds. It won’t be completely the same, but we’re going to build the program on rebounding and playing hard. We’re not going to be afraid to take a kid who is an inch shorter or was maybe overlooked or doesn’t quite have the ranking as the next person. We want to see the upside and talent in the guys who have a chip on their shoulder and develop them over time. Then we’ll fill in with a junior college player who can make an impact and help get the program going while some of our high school kids develop.

The 'Shockers were a favorite of mine from the days when they had Lynbert "Cheese" Johnson and then Antoine Carr and Cliff Levingston. Good to see the program return to the prominence it had in those days.

Plus the original nickname "Wheatshockers" is about as cool as it gets...

Coach Jans recently appeared on JT the Brick's nationally syndicated show on Fox Sports Radio. Now that's how you promote a program! =D>

According to the New York Times, Wichita State's mascot was inspired by none other than the BGSU Falcon seen during an NIT game in 1954 when the two teams played. 50 years later we hire someone from their program to be our head coach.
