We are a third of the way through the season and started off an exciting 7-3 with some nice wins and a terrible loss. I think we are finally starting to see some players fall into roles. I am not sure if I need to get used to not having defined roles or if they are coming along.
5. Holmes is a stud. Averaging 14.5ppg, 9.8rpg, 2.5bpg. He is the rock of the team for sure, has to be amongst the best in the MAC.
2/3. Denny has been a huge surprise. 9.8ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.7spg. 40%3PT. Denny has been a great surprise as our second best player. He can't really get his own shot but he does literally everything else well including the expected 40%3PT and the unexpected, second on the team with 4.9 rpg
3/4. Parker has been solid but not as good as last year. 7.5ppg, 3.5rpg. Parker's minutes are way down with a greatly improved bench. His game is more activity, and motor than basketball ability.
2 Henderson hasn't been much to talk about either way. A capable senior starter he's averaging 5.7ppg and shooting well from 3 at 37%
1. Joseph/Austin. You can't talk about one without talking about the other. Both flash moments of scoring and distributing but both can get out of control at times and have unforced turnovers. This is the position I am probably most disappointed in so far this year. I expected 1 if not both of these guys to really take control of the position and the team. Neither has. The position is improved in terms of offensive control, but it's not where I expected it to be after watching the first game.
Joseph 4.3ppg 3.8apg
Austin 6.1ppg 2.6apg
Bench
A. Clarke. He has found a great role off the bench. Doesn't have to handle the ball much and can just shoot and drive. He is active all over the court but best on offense. 9.9ppg, 3rpg, 39%3PT
B. Dickerson. Not sure what his role is but I like him. He seems like Germain Fitch but a better Bball player. I do want him to stop shooting 3s. There was talk of him being the number one scorer on our team and that seems pretty far off now. 5ppg 3.8rpg. I hate that he is sometimes playing center for us. I am actually a bit surprised with Mayleben starting to not play as much that we didn't consider peeling that Worrell redshirt.
Bench 2
A. Mayleben has played every game but his minutes are shrinking aggressively. Has played in just 12 minutes total the last 4 games. He is more athletic then I expected but doesn't seem to bring much to the table other than size.
B. Tisdale's role has been sporadic as well. I had heard that there were some injuries but I am not sure what's going on with him.
What we are missing.
1. A get your own shot scorer. Could be Austin, Clarke, Joseph and I wouldn't be surprised. Someone needs to be able to do it.
2. PF or backup C. Mayleben is there but he has seemed to have fallen out of favor.
3. An offensive approach that doesn't have Holmes 20 feet from the hoop often.
4. A PG to take control of the game.
5. A more aggressive defense. We are loaded with guards and athletes but not much size. I would love to press more.
I think we have nailed a ton of things so far. Denny-Clarke-Holmes-Parker all have clear defined roles and are performing well within them. We are 7-3 with some big wins. I truly think this team can win the MAC
