NIU's basketball court design

I just turned on the NIU-Akron game on ESPN3 after our game and wasn't aware of NIU's new court design. Good Lord!

The court may be new, but it is not very TV friendly. It is sort of like watching TV football on the Boise turf.......way too busy, and the black background is not friendly either. Hopefully it is better in person.
On a positive note, if it keeps NIU beating Akron, like they did tonight, I'm all for it!

NIU's design isn't quite as hard to watch on TV as Oregon's "Deep in the Woods" design is, but anything out around mid-court is extremely distracting and hard to view. I understand the intention but damn.

I thought the same thing. However, there is genius to it-so ugly... it distracts the other team. Akron couldn't hit the ocean tonight if they were out in the middle in a rowboat.

This is the MAC - win all of your conference home games, and at least half of the road contests and you're going to be in good shape.

Well, Akron has won something like 11 consecutive times in Bowling Green including each meeting in the Stroh Center. But I recognize the point you're making. The bottom line is this, if we can't beat Akron at home this year, with us finally being up and them being somewhat down - and minus their best player, then it could be an eternity until we do it again. I was at JAR Arena last week and Akron simply whipped our ass. Period. That game was over at halftime as they buried us midway through the first half with a 27-2 run.

Now, I hope we can break the Akron drought this year as well, but if it doesn't happen in the next meeting, then maybe it will take until next year (or in the MAC tourney). Things are moving in the right direction, despite that loss to Akron, so I don't know why we should be so hung up on it.

This is sensible. The past is over. We've got to win the MAC tourney to get into the dance, and we've got a reasonable shot. This is what we should worry about.

The loss to Akron last week was most troublesome by the way they did it. We shouldn't be allowing anyone in the country to go on a 27-2 run on us, we're better than that. Not Kentucky, not Virginia, and not Akron. But a loss is a loss. Now in most cases, you could easily chalk it up as it's just one game. But not against this opponent. And as far as not talking about the past, it's easy to say it's in the past and that we should keep it there. But when one more loss to Akron leads to one of the current streak of 20 losses in the last 21 meetings to a team, yeah, we're gonna discuss it. That losing streak might be in the past as far as who and how it was started, but it's very much in the present as far as its validity. When you have 12 consecutive losses to an opponent, and also 11 consecutive losses to that same team on your home floor, you can't simply ignore it by saying it's in the past. It's not gonna end until BG beats Akron. Plain and simple. And don't kid yourself for one second thinking that our current guys aren't aware of the dominance of Akron vs BG. They know it and are aware of it, as is our current head coach. It's in our guys' heads whether they say they don't think about it or not, and the only thing that's gonna put it to rest is a win. Not talking about it or trying to ignore it isn't gonna make it go away. It's not going anywhere until BG wins and ends it. If Akron beats us on the 31st and say we face them in the MAC Championship in Cleveland, you don't think extra pressure won't be on BG because of it? Hell yeah there will. The game against Akron on the 31st is much more than just another game against a MAC East foe - and we all know it. It's along the same lines of BG's NCAA Tournament drought that's now approaching 50 years. The talk about us never getting back is never gonna end until we finally (if ever) do.

Well the next time we beat Akron, it will be that much more worth it. However, I just looked at the standings and we are doing just fine. So we played like s**t and got pounded on the road. Duke got pounded by Miami (Fl.). It's college basketball, and 30 plus game season where you play games in empty gyms on weeknights, those happen. At the end of the day, if BG goes 2-1 over the next 9 days, I'll be happy, regardless of whether the loss is to Akron. Again, Louis Orr was coaching in 15 games of 21. I'm still surprised BG won the 1 it did (total fluke game and season). I'll take Jans, the positive momentum, and choose not to give 2 shits about Akron until the 31st. BG basketball is in a great place right now.
