BG vs Kent State

This game reminded me an awful lot of the Akron game here. Both games BG built leads, allowed Akron and Kent State to come back, and then lost by a point in the closing seconds. Both games BG had the lead and the ball near the final minute mark and both times we fell apart late. This one will ultimately cost us a regular season title.

It was another tough, tough loss. I always say if my team is going to lose, I'd rather there be no doubt about it. Games like this just eat at me and linger for a long time. Had Kent State come in here and beat us by 15-20 it would have sucked, but so be it. I'd have said the better team tonight then. But to overcome all the threes they hit and still lead by a bucket with the ball with a minute to go and the fall apart like when turning the ball over on the over and back, missed both free throws, and how we simply could not stop all the threes made against us - it was a complete dagger. But hats off to Kent State. They never flinched and shot the hell out of the ball. It didn't matter if they were way behind the arc or if a guy was in their face, they kept rising up and drilling long three after three all game long, includung in the very end to retake the lead for good. It was extremely impressive. When we called a timeout to set up a play with the lead and the ball and a minute to go and had the over and back - I knew we were going to lose the game right then and there. We are much improved but we still lack the ability to consistently close out games. It's nearly cost us in others we actually won but it cost us dearly tonight.

The game stung for all the reasons previously described, but things have to be kept in perspective. This is a team that has as good a chance as any to win the MAC tournament, and the MAC tournament is the lone ticket to the NCAA's and all that really matters at the end of the day (other than beating Toledo). There's a LOT left to play for.

Just watching the live stat line, I know I was frustrated...guaranteed TWO FT's late in game and miss em BOTH? So we're tied again with a trip to Buffalo, who just beat us at our place.

Anyone know how the crowd was? I know several alluded to this being biggest game in Stroh history...would be nice to see we had a BIG turnout for a change.
Just watching the live stat line, I know I was frustrated...guaranteed TWO FT's late in game and miss em BOTH? So we're tied again with a trip to Buffalo, who just beat us at our place.

IT was a better crowd than we've had all year. More people, and louder than usual. More students than usual as well.

Not what I'd like to see for the final game with 1st place on the line, but it's a step in the right direction. If they can make a run in the tourney we'll see more people there next year. Losing the fans wasn't a 1 year thing, so we cannot expect them to come back in 1 year. But case in point, had a group of us that haven't sat together for a game in probably 5 years or more. When Jans builds it, they will come.

While you are correct -- this emphasis gets a big Y-A-W-N from most players...until they have to make them with the game on the line. Unless players take it upon themselves to practice their free throw shooting, it's never going to be emphasized in practices; there simply isn't enough time allowed by the NCAA. Players today would rather slam and shoot 3s than practice free throws. And we've all seen the result in most college games.

Literally any one play will make the difference in a 1 point game. They were 12/16 before Dickerson missed the last two. He's a season 44% shooter from the line. It was unfortunate to have the least proficient free throw shooter on the roster take what could turn out to be the most important shots of the season.

I'm not ripping Dickerson. Every player, every person, has strengths and weaknesses. He was in there to rebound a Kent State missed free throw and was fouled doing just that.

That's a non sequitor. Who wouldn't rather slam and shoot 3s than practice free throws? It has nothing to do with whether they do actually practice free throws or not.

BG is at 70% as a team this season. Maybe the team percentage would ideally be closer to 75%, but that's arguing on the margins.

It's rare that coaches open practices to the public. But maybe there's some insight into what's emphasized that I don't know about.
