In a previous post I made the comment that it will be an interesting offseason watching the practice by practice battle between Lefeld, Sullivan, Holland and Marschall. I still think this may be the case. However, I was thinking about it and went a step further. We have a gaping hole at PF awaiting us next year. We will lose 3 players over 6-6 to graduation each of which has played some form of the position. We dont have any player coming back who has played any substantial number of minutes at PF. We may have talent at the position but we dont know that yet. And this may be the best news for our future. Why? We have one scholarship left. I don't know who is still out there, and I don't know whom we are in contact with(rivals lovers, jump on it please), but it seems like a great formula to grab a very very solid PF. we can almost guarantee him a starting position, plus we can all but guarantee him a ton of shots, because we will be losing our top two scorers. If we play our cards right, and are a little lucky, we could still get the class of our recruiting class. Dakich could end up looking like a genius should he scoop up a blue chipper to put an exclamation point on an already solid class.
I initially forgot to mention the fact that he would be playing next to a 6-11 shotblocker who would be able to clean up many of his defensive errors.
Great Situation?=1 scholarship, Starting PF spot available

I don't give a damn what our record is or where we finish in the MAC, if the last scholarship isn't used on a 6-3 combo guard then we completely missed the boat.
Of all the transfers this program has seen over the last few years, Erick Crawford and Chris Hobson are the two that I would take back without hesitation. Both are dynamic "lay it on the floor" defensive players that could play a lot of minutes at two and in Crawford's case three positions.
What I really like about both of them is that Floyd's minutes would take a hit if either were still around as well.

So you think we could sell a better 6-3 combo guard on playing behind Wright/Floyd/Perrick/Montgomery maybe and with Wilson over a PF who can start and be one of our top scorers automatically. You have to take best player available. And right now our situation lends to getting the best PF available.
Defensive 6-3 guards are a dime a dozen in the JC ranks. We could scoop one up without much trouble.

Yes, absolutely I would take a 6-3 defensive minded combo guard who can play two positions any day of the week over another undersized power forward. We would need a guy who goes about 6-8/240 or bigger to come in and play with VanderMeer. That guy may or may not be Erik Marschall.
Mawi and Marschall at power forward allow us to do something we haven't been able to do in the past few years and that's put as many athletes on the floor as the other team.
Moon is going to be an effective player, but he is a year or more away from that. Floyd is always going to be erratic, but provide occassional sparks on offense and play horrific defense. It just the way it is . . .
Wright is better suited at the two spot as this year has proven and Nick Wilson has been described by Dakich as the "best rebounder" of the bunch and he's listed at most sites at 6-5. Lionel Sullivan by all accounts plays more like a small forward and is probably the best overall player we have coming in.
Montgomery and Fitch return, but I don't hold my breath on what Germain will be able to do coming off of a 4th knee surgery and Montgomery is fine as long as he doesn't handle the ball and lurks around the three point line for open shots. Given enough touches, Montgomery can be effective doing that, but again he's a defensive liability.
VanderMeer is going to need a big body down low so that his partner in crime takes the bumps and physical play and he can roam and play help-side and block shots. Lefeld has to get minutes or look at some of the schools we play in early December. I think he's been nursing several small injuries, but that's just me.
So yes, I still stand by my comments that we are in dire need of a 6-3 combo guard b/c this is the way we currently break down next year . . .
PG- Moon (So), Floyd (Jr)
SG- Wright (Jr), My Guy (Fr), Montgomery (Jr)
SF- Sullivan (Fr), Wilson (Fr), Holland (Fr)
PF- Soler (Sr), Marschall (Fr), Fitch (Sr)
C- VanderMeer(So), Lefeld (Jr)

Option, you're right on target about us needing a guard. We need a quick, athletic guard for our perimeter depth (Gad, I wish Hobson was still here). Three of our four signees are potential PF's and Vandermeer and Soler can both swing down there in a pinch. Any additional PFs that we'd sign at this point would be at least as unknown as our current signees. This is how I see it next year:
PG: Moon, Floyd
2G: Wright, Signee, (Montgomery)
SF: Soler, Wilson, (Fitch as an assistant coach)
PF: Holland, Sullivan, Marcshall
C: Vandermeer, Lefeld
I have no idea which of the three will start at PF. Holland seems to be the best scorer of the bunch, and I suspect that that will be what we need most. It will be very interesting to watch these guys factor into the rotation.
At some point, GBitch has to assess the risk of a FIFTH injury to his ACL and what that means for his ability to function (i.e., walking) in everyday life. I suspect that at this point, his decision criteria for playing again is starting to shift significantly.
If and when we sign the athletic 6-3 guy, what does that imply for the bench-ridden Montgomery and his desire to remain at BG? The reason I mention this is that we may be offering 2 scholarships in the spring rather than one. Ideally, Montgomery would get stronger and improve his defense so that DD could use him. His progress to date has been nil, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

While I think we could possibly land a stud PF, I don't think that is necessarily our biggest need. We've got a lot of guys who could likely play that position.
Right now we have only 3 true guards on our roster: Wright, Floyd, and Moon. And Floyd cannot guard anyone, so he's only a guard on one end of the field
Seriously though, we NEED perimeter depth big time. If one of those three gets hurt we are SCREWED.
College hoops is won & lost by guard play. This isn't the NBA. Big men are great, but I'll take the guards any day (and usually make money in the NCAA pool with this philosophy).
I really miss Hobson, too, he was the best on the ball defending guard we've had, probably since DeMar Moore. But that is in the past. I think we are best served to find a 6'2-6'4 combo guard that can play defense. A guy with quick hands, and the willingness to play defense first. It couldn't hurt if they can play offense too, but I can wait for that to develop. I really want a guy that we can count on to get a stop in the final minutes of the game.
