Forrest Creason GC

Post by zete »

There will not be any more golf at Forrest Creason after the upcoming season. The Sentinel in BG reported today the course will be closing.
I always enjoyed the basketball outings out there and thought it was the right place to have them.

I agree with you on the BGCC.

I think it would be good if the BGCC took over Forrest Creason. The BGCC is struggling for members but alot has to do with it only being 9 holes and run down. I know certain members and I know who runs the CC and they have money. It's just not feasible for them to fix up the course and maintain its buildings.

I think the BGCC should sell the property to the park district. The park could then use that land to expand the water park, maybe keep a hole or two for a driving range putting survice. The rest of the land could be green space, walking trails, soccer fields.

By selling the CC they would receive a decent amount of money. They could then flip that money into purchasing and upgrading FC. They could add a members only clubhouse. The Clubhouse could be used for banquets or weddings. Endless possibilities.

I don't disagree with the premise, gmartin, but I question the feasibility of a 2nd (including Stone Ridge) full on Golf Course/banquet facilities/etc.

The BGCC is definitely hurting with that 9 hole only course. It's not just a 9 hole course, it's really not even enough land for a 9 hole course. The thing plays ridiculously short. I haven't played there in years, but I could easily play it with 5 clubs or less. It's so short I don't even find the course enjoyable.

If they bought FC and put the money into it to fix the course (it needs a TON of work), and build a banquet hall type facility (would probably have to go to the Driving Range Property?). Even if they could bring it up to a viable alternative to Stone Ridge, it'd cost them so much money to get it up to that level, I don't see how they'd ever recoup those costs. It would cost them as much in renovation costs to bring that course to a quality to compete with Stone Ridge as it would to buy the property, IMO.

I'd LOVE to see somebody attempt to do that, I just don't see the endgame. I don't think BG can support 2 quality facilities/courses, and it's proven to be a failure as a 2nd tier course. The only arguments to justify it, I suppose, is if you thought Creason & BGCC competing against one another has harmed both, but a consolidation could make it work. I'm skeptical of that... Or, I suppose if the U just mis-managed what you think COULD be profitable/sustainable? I suppose that is possible... I know one thing, it's been VERY hard to justify playing there when Riverby is like $2 more and a MUCH better layout. And if you want a discounted course Tanglewood is dumpy, but not greatly worse than Creason, at considerably cheaper rates.

Bad idea.

If the directors of BGCC did this, they would go to jail for fraud.

BGCC leases the land the club sits on from the city of Bowling Green for a $1 a year.

They can't sell what doesn't belong to them.

Not positive on the arrangement , but I believe the only part of the BGCC they actually own is the land the clubhouse sits on. The city owns the actual golf course.

Played BGCC a time of two recently and think their greens roll as well as any in the area. Probably due to lack of play.
The place is short because is about 100 years old and was made for hickory shafted clubs. Not much they can do about lengthening it. Nonetheless, it is a great track for juniors, seniors and women.
Believe it or not, they had the MAC Championship there sometime during the early 1960s. BG hosted and told coaches to bring their fishing poles so they could fish the quarry while the event was taking place.

Wow. The BGCC pays $1 a year for rent. Wow. Where can I get a deal like that.

Buy an NFL team?

I think that's what the Browns pay, per year, for the publicly owned Cleveland Browns stadium. And how seriously fucked up is that arrangement?

Not only is the stadium publicly funded, and leased for virtually nothing to the Browns, the public is also not allowed to USE the stadium. The Browns have say in concerts or any other events held at the stadium, and of course they take all that revenue as well...seriously, WTF. And I don't think this is an uncommon arrangement at all.

I'm not anti public funding these things. It's undeniable what a downtown NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL team can do for the local economy/restaurant scene/etc, but to publicly fund it AND not actually own the building? That rubs me wrong. If the public funds the building then they should be able to host concerts and other events to add some funding to the coffers...
