Keith Dambrot leaving Akron

Post by gmartin »

Dusquene trying to lure Dambrot away from Akron. This will be the 3rd time they attempted to get him to leave Akron. I think this time he may leave.

7 years / 7 million plus incentives
40 million in upgrades to arena over the next couple years

I'm not a Dambrot fan but this would be a big loss for the MAC.

That is a huge loss for Akron. That guy was far and away the best coach in the conference.

It does not feel good losing a coach to Duquesne. That's a stronger basketball conference, but it doesn't seem like a stronger program at all.

Standing back and looking at this who could blame him? Not much more he could have done with the Zips. I'm sure he was somewhat frustrated. Especially after the D Tredwell and A Abreu situations.......Tough to get to the NCAAs as a MAC team. Once there a 13 or 14 seed does little to inspire hope. Then there is always the NIT and you had better be a good road team to advance there. When Keith brought his MAC boys home from Texas, I'm sure he realized it wasn't going to get much better anytime soon.
Dambrot, having the MAC player of the year in I JOhnson; He himself being awarded the COY honor, and where did it all end? A blowout loss to TexArlington. Things will probably be of little difference at Duquesne, but the big difference maker is the money, usually is, and lots of it in this case. K Dambrot will retire comfortably with a golden parachute attached to his back as he walks the sidelines in Pittsburgh. Good for him, he had a decent thing going at Ak, but must have needed a change.

Dambrot not making much more money at Dusquene. Last year with all incentives on top of salary he made $932,000. Dusquene with incentives are radio shows he us to make about 100k more per year so the salary is pretty much a wash. However Pittsburgh is a nicer and safer city than Akron. Dusquene also is doing a 40 million dollar renovation to its arena. Plus the A-10 is a better conference.

I thought he might be a lifer at Akron since they gave him another chance after the "N bomb" fiasco at CMU in the early 90's...but...the frustration of winning 95 games in four years (53 in two) and not going to the tournament wore him down .
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Dambrot needed to schedule better teams out of conference if he wanted an at-large bid. With his schedule, going 28-4 wasn't worthy of an at-large pic.

I read elsewhere that he had a son playing soccer at Pitt, so he would be able to see his games. Someone else posted his father played at Dusquene (don't know if that is true or not).
