Re: Donation to the Stroh Center for Marketing Games
Double post because I'm stupid. It's no wonder I currently don't have enough money to make a sizable donation to BG athletics. I don't even know how to avoid double posting.
Re: Donation to the Stroh Center for Marketing Games
Kudos to you for your donation. My sincere question is now that you are donating a scholarship does baseball see an increase in their scholarship allotment?Falconwriter wrote:Well, it's a damn good thing you aren't in charge, then. Don't need your negativity, because fundraising with you in charge would be a total bust.Clubber wrote:I could care less either way. Used to really enjoy following the baseball program. I think if they were fully funded they'd compete for titles. That's more than can be said for most of the BG programs. At this point though I'd be okay if they cut it. Not real big into underfunding a once outstanding program just to say we still field a team.
Carry on with your marquee discussion...my larger point was that I wouldn't donate money until I saw the University commit to athletics. Being last in the MAC in funding with an extra "revenue" sport to support isn't exactly being committed in my opinion.
I'll proudly say that I have NOT given up on BG athletics (any of them) and, in fact, have endowed a baseball scholarship in memory of my late husband, who loved the game as much as I did. When I'm gone, the endowment will grow via my estate, and the scholarship will go to a deserving student (or students), hopefully for many, many decades to come.
See, actually DOING SOMETHING about the issue of under-funded sports is much better than complaining about it on a sports site.
My concern would be that despite you endowing a scholarship, baseball would still not see an increase. Your money would basically just be going to the revenue sports.
If your scholarship gets baseball closer to 11.7 then great.
I agree with your post on the other sports forum. Baseball shouldn't ever be considered to be cut. My point is that if you are going to not support the program as a department, then you probably shouldn't have it anymore.

That's not possible. It's an ENDOWED scholarship, meaning it is legally set up to go exclusively for an athlete or athletes who play baseball for BGSU. It cannot be used for any other purpose. Period. So, yes, it gets them close to the 11.5, which is another reason I chose baseball, aside from the sentimental ones that baseball evoked.Clubber wrote:Kudos to you for your donation. I would like my donation to go directly to an outside video board. I would like the video board to be used to show upcoming events at the Stroh Center that you can read while walking/driving by the Stroh on Wooster St. I want it to be a two sided video board displaying announcements and schedules on each side. I DON'T want something that you would see at the BGHS or at CVS or Walgreens. I want this to be about the size of our football video board. Any thoughts? Surprised the university hasn't placed a video board at any of it's athletic venues to promote upcoming events.
First, as a fellow Falcon, THANK YOU!
Naturally, something visible from both directions by drivers is desired. However, visibility to students would be a huge benefit, and the Stroh is not centrally located - perhaps part of this donation could go towards a 2nd, smaller board located by the student union?
Another thought is a simpler billboard facing both directions on I-75 announcing game dates.
I'll post additional thoughts as they occur to me.

Oh it's possible. I have no doubt your money will go to a baseball player. My worry would be that if the school is paying for 9 scholarships, now they only have to pay for 8. They'll take the money they saved and put it toward something else rather than adding to baseball's scholarship allotment. I hope this isn't the case. Regardless, it is very generous of you.Falconwriter wrote:That's not possible. Re: Donation to the Stroh Center for Marketing Games
The money I'm giving legally cannot be used for anything but baseball. That is the contract I signed. Now, can the university decide to "take back" money it had used for one baseball scholarship before my gift? Sure. I would hope they'd let things stand so the team would be closer to its full amount of scholarships...but let's be honest here: there are a number of sports at BG that rely on general fees to be funded (or general donations). It's up to the AD to fight for how he wants the money allocated, and where he wants to put the emphasis. I know for a fact that members of the Athletic Department are always out looking for people, like me, who are willing to endow scholarships for specific sports. In the end, if enough alums or patrons step up, we could take a huge burden off the Athletic Department in its reliance on general student fees to run the athletic program.
