Why not us...
Why not us...
Greg Kampe and Oakland just recruited a 7' 255lb center from Nigeria. So the question is. Why not us. Why can't BG ever get a 7 ft center.

Perhaps we are holding out for an eight footer.gmartin wrote:Greg Kampe and Oakland just recruited a 7' 255lb center from Nigeria. So the question is. Why not us. Why can't BG ever get a 7 ft center.

Not to be a jerk but i had 2 thoughts:
1. Kampe has been at Oakland since '84, how many 7 footers has he had in the past 33 seasons?
2. What percentage of teams that visit BG with a 7-footer give significant playing time for that giant?

Teams don't really have a traditional center anymore. The 7-footers going to the NBA could very well (and often do) play power forward. If a 7-footer were to come to BG, it would probably be someone who isn't a great shooter and can't run the floor well (save Richaun Holmes, who was clearly a diamond in the rough looking back). I'll take a 6'8" complete player any day over a 7'.

Much more annoyed by our lack of finding a consistent knock down shooter/scorer to put on the wing. Orr didn't recruit a single legit wing scorer in his entire tenure. I'm hoping Frye can become that guy here.
Even more annoyed that we haven't been able to find a legit facilitating PG. In '01-'02 Pardon averaged > 6 apg and was 2:1 a:to ratio. We haven't had a starting PG go 2:1 since that season. We've not had anybody go over 6 apg since, and only got 1 season of Floyd at 5 apg. Most years our starting PGs were under 4 apg and typically closer to 1.25 a:to ratio. You cannot win in college hoops without a real PG.
I'd love a true stud 7' center, but it seems most of the time the 7' guys that end up in the MAC are stiffs anyhow. If they DO turn out to be good players they tend to be stiffs for a couple years and then blossom as late bloomers for good jr/sr seasons. I wouldn't complain about it, but it's not my biggest issue with this program.

Re: Why not us...
What do we know about this kid from Nigeria going to Oakland? Seven footers (or 6-10 and above) have flowed thru the MAC for the past 20 years without making a bit of difference. Outside of Chris Kaman and maybe Jason Terry, how many of these guys are worth having? How do you know this kid can even dribble milk?
It's interesting to look at rosters of Big-10/SEC/ACC schools. It's not uncommon to find a couple giants that don't make an impact for their team

Zeke Marshall was worth having, and a pretty good MAC player by the time he graduated, but he was never anywhere close to what people thought he would be. I think he was a 4* recruit and true 7' guy. He was supposed to own the MAC...never did.
Hell at the NBA level decent 7' guys are becoming a thing of the past. Nobody wants a pound it down low center anymore.
