I do believe if Huger gets another job, his salary will offset some of what BG owes him. Of course, he could sit at home and collect his paycheck, but I do think he loves coaching and will want to find another job. Regardless, this was a move that had to be made. And if Frack money is used, so be it.TommyG wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 11:18 am Hopefully one of the reporters asks the AD where the buyout money is coming from. When you cry about budget as much as BG Athletics does then there needs to be some transparency on paying someone close to a million dollars to sit at home for 2 years. I’m fine if they used the Frack money, but I’d like to hear them say that is what they did.
There should be a lot of really good candidates…BG is one of the better jobs in the conference, just going to take someone willing put in the work.

This is a huge celebration and opportunity
Not sure we can poach a horizon league coach. I know Dennis gates was making more at Cleveland st and went straight to Missouri with his success.
I don't have any names but my thought is a top D2 coach or a top assistant at a big mid major that doesn't have a head coaching failure on the resume

Re: Huger Fired
Gates had a really large salary by Horizon standards. Their current coach (Robinson) is making far less than Gates was, and about $100k less than Huger made. Calhoun at YSU is making less than half Huger's salary at "only" $200k/yr.fanatic13 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 11:45 am This is a huge celebration and opportunity

I can certainly see why those guys would stick at their current job rather than taking on a challenge at BG, but going from $200-300k/yr to $400-500k/yr isn't insignificant (IMO). I wouldn't be at all shocked to see us find a way to pay $500k this time around with the hopes that winning brings back the fans (and donors).
As mediocre as Huger's run was, we did still pull in a lot of people for big games in our successful seasons years back. That potential is still there.

Can’t disagree with you on this.hammb wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 11:13 amHe might get that part, but I'd have a hard time getting excited for a guy that has been back in the assistant ranks for 15+ yrs and was pretty dismal in his last HC gig. He had a nice run at Hampton, but I think his days as a HC candidate are long gone.maskedopining wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 10:58 am Steve Merfeld is associate Head Coach at Creighton I believe. Was a relatively successful head coach at Hampton, less so at Evansville. Was an assistant at BG for a long time. Way not be the right way to go, but I think he would get the face of the program thing that you mention Hammb.

Re: Huger Fired
I don’t care how many games a coach won 10 years ago, we played by different rules back then. We need a HC or assistant that has won with NIL and easy transfer rules. And don’t give the old “he’s here for the long haul” because this fan base desires a dance card. If he’s here in 10 years that means he never got there. I want a clean program that wins, hire that guy.
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

Re: Huger Fired
HammB I love the take of not going big school. I agree but would take someone if they had the background before.
Calhoun seems like an ideal guy if he's available.
I like Ricardo Greer too but he hasn't been a head coach before. He's a riser with no experience coaching outside of Dayton
Obviously Stacy is interesting but I don't know if he's ready yet. Would want him back on staff
I know very little about Darrin Horn but he's had success at NKU

There is nothing better then not being tied to this coach for another year or two

Re: Huger Fired
I’m hoping by Stacy tou mean Anthony Stacey. After Huger I’d want steer clear of that, and at least know what happened with the Dylan Frye deal. What did Stacey know and who did what sort of thing.

First name that comes to my mind is John Groce. I know he’s at Akron, but have always been impressed by him and his teams. We need someone like him that has that fire in his belly. A proven winner that can recruit and gets the most out of his team.
Re: Huger Fired
John Grose won’t be interested in BG, not sure we could give him much of a raise. If you wanted a veteran coach that has won in the MAC you could go after Jim Christian. Proven winner in the MAC both at Kent St and Ohio U.

Re: Huger Fired
Hoping that Anthony Stacey at least gets an interview.
Re: Huger Fired
I love Anthony Stacey but his resume does not even warrant an interview. Spend some time with him to see why he left and what went wrong? Sure. Recommend the new coach talk to him about an assistant job? Ok.
Being 2nd/3rd assistant for Huger and coaching Whitmer HS is not a resume worth considering as the head coach.
We need to set our sights higher. I also have zero interest in more alumni to make us dislike our favorite players when they fail.
Re: Huger Fired
+1
Hell Stacey played several games in my parents driveway back in the mid 90s. I want to still look on that fondly lol
Re: Huger Fired
Look back at when Stacey left. That was the start of the decline for Huger
