Ohio
At half it’s 34-32 Falcons. Some weird charging calls in both directions, but overall a solid game. Marcus Johnson with the 3 at the buzzer to put us in the lead.
This is a winnable game if we keep playing tough.

Blew a 9 point lead and now trail by 5 with a minute to play.
I don’t think we’re getting to Cleveland.

We're actually a really good FT shooting team on the whole. Tonight we were not.footballguy51 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2025 9:02 pm Free throws. Why is it always free throws with this team?
And the entire OU roster shot like they were Steph Curry. 30-34 is nutso.
We gave a good fight, it was closer than I expected, but still a loss. We cannot win close games because we cannot execute in tight situations on either end of the floor. Our offense devolves into hoping Johnson can pull something out of his rear. Defensively OU scored on like 10+ straight possessions down the stretch.
Really shocked we kept Felt on the bench during that stretch. If Felt isn't on the floor we cannot defend the paint at all.
The refs really took control of the 2nd half themselves. It wasn't one sided or biased or anything. But who wants to see 30 fouls called in a half?
Re: Ohio
This season is done. Probably has been since the Eastern Michigan loss. For next year, I’m much less intrigued by the idea of adding another big who can’t move but can shoot a bit in Goins. We kinda see that unless you have a guard capable of play making for that person they are a huge liability on both ends even when they do score. But like every year the roster will get blown up and it will look much different next year. If a healthy Campbell, YoYo and Felt stay you have the ability to build around that.
And I have concerns about Simon and his coaching in close games. We’ve lost a lot more of those than we have won in two years especially at home.

Re: Ohio
They exploited Johnson like crazy. During their big run towards the end, they put Johnson defending a pick and roll and every time he simply guarded neither player but got in our own player’s way. All of those easy buckets by #13 were squarely on Johnson’s inability to defend a basic offensive play.

Re: Ohio
In some ways the worst thing to happen was the Michigan St game. Johnson goes off, social media runs wild, BG gets a commit from Goins the next week because we somehow think we’ve reinvented basketball. Meanwhile if you watch that game again you realize Towns was as much a part as anyone of why BGSU led for as long as they did. Towns was incredible in that game. The next weekend they get totally exposed by Bellarmine and Khayat and Towns both get hurt. Go find another big who wants to offensive rebound and guard the pick and roll, who cares if they can shoot. Atleast Johnson can flat score, Squire can’t do either and gave the team nothing despite all the injuries.
Re: Ohio
I have been thinking this exact same thing. Towns has been a much bigger loss than I really anticipated, and it becomes most clear when you watch the early season games and how much of an impact he has. On the other hand, it has allowed for Felt to shine this year, and I think if we shift away from big and slow and can somehow have Towns and Felt out there at the same time, we become exponentially better on defense.guest44 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 9:25 am In some ways the worst thing to happen was the Michigan St game. This has been the case all year. I was saying way back early in the season to folks around me I didn't think he was playable against MAC competition. I haven't changed my mind at all.footballguy51 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 8:06 am They exploited Johnson like crazy. I don't care what his scoring numbers look like he is a losing basketball player. It's made all that much worse by the fact that his offense comes in iso ball where he fumbles around and turns it over or takes bad shots as often as good.
His skill level at shooting and passing are off the charts good. But he's not athletically gifted enough to draw enough defensive attention to really leverage his passing. And his shooting percentage is decent but his shot selection/creating are so bad he's taking a ton of ridiculously difficult shots.
His only real use would be as an off ball shooting option, but he's so bad defensively you can't really play him this many minutes. It was mind boggling to me that he was on the floor until fouling out last night while felt sat on the bench.

Re: Ohio
It looked to me that Felt was hurting a little. He seemed to be favoring his left thigh in the second half. Sort of limping.hammb wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 12:01 pmhammb wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 11:59 amThis has been the case all year. Re: Ohio
The officials took over the game so I’m not sure who to blame but how could Felt sit through that entire stretch? I was high on this coaching staff but I now have a lot of questions. Why are we so bad late in games?
Do we know what Felt’s +- is? I feel like he has to be on the floor if Johnson is on the floor. There has to be a rim protector when Johnson is playing defense.

Re: Ohio
Unfortunately, I don't think they track +/- for college games. I'm also pretty skeptical of the advanced statistics in college basketball (especially the MAC), because they're not normalized for quality of opponent, nor do I trust the reliability of the statistics required to generate those stats.Hammer wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2025 4:46 pm The officials took over the game so I’m not sure who to blame but how could Felt sit through that entire stretch? That being said, the net ratings do line up with a lot of my eye test on the season with regard to which players are +/- in net rating.
Felt has one of the best ORtgs on the team at 117.9. He's also got one of the best DRtgs on the team at 103.7. That is a whopping +14.2 net rating, by FAR the best on the team for guys that have played all year. Towns & Yoyo both had crazy net ratings (statistically just sample size variance, but it does serve to show how much they impacted our chances of winning).
Marcus is considered a positive (which I question), at +.9. Thomas and Green are both god awful at -10 & -22 respectively. Some of it doesn't make a ton of sense though. I do think Felt is helpful on offense, but I question him having the highest ORtg on the team. I greatly question Marcus not being the worst DRtg on the team. So much of these advanced stats can also be skewed by which part of games you play, which lineups you play in, etc. Even in the NBA where they are telling, they're not the end all be all.
