There are more than 1,000 players in the portal, which opened yesterday. It's pure insanity.

Basically 2.5 per program. More to come as the tournaments wind down.

Cue the "This is madness!" quote from the movie 300.

This. I want to be the biggest BG fan, but it feels hopeless.

It's hard to care about college athletics in general. Players and coaches bolting year after year. It used to be a lot to help fund the next athletic department initiative. Now fans need to fund NIL so kids can get paid (athletes should get paid).

Unless you can print money, this just doesn't make sense.

I agree, that's why I watched 3 games this year.

Yeah. I talk a lot about not really watching BG football anymore, but in reality it's all of college football. I barely watch the sport at all.

My deep connection to BGSU basketball has kept me active here, on facebook, and attending games, but the college basketball world itself is just no longer interesting. I've barely even watched any of the tournament anymore, it's not fun any longer. As somebody who used to take vacation days to watch the first 2 days of the tournament, now I maybe consumed 4-5 hours of college basketball in total last weekend, and that's including time at the bar with friends where we barely paid attention to the games that were on.

If college sports is just pro sports with younger players, it's just bad versions of those sports. Now that the Cavs are good, and NFL football is on 3 days a week I've got no real use for college sports.

Yep...I had next to no interest in the men's program this year. I watched a couple of games, didn't find the team to be very interesting, so I tuned out. Watched more women's hoops this year...but that was often an exercise in frustration. Football? I have some interest in the product again, but overall like hammb ...I'm less interested in college sports because the $$$ and the migration towards two super conferences has homogenized the product and made it less interesting.

I'm a Detroit guy ....the Lions were fun to watch even if injuries cut their season a little short. The Piston's have been a very fun team to watch this year and up until their usual March collapse, the Wings were having a decent year. The Tigers made an improbable run to the post season and their farm system is one of the best in baseball, so spring, summer and early fall are covered the.

Don't think I'll ever have the level of interest and engagement I had with college and BGSU sports again...unless something drastic happens.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

From what I understand they have shifted their focus to going after larger gifts and corporate partnerships. I give a very modest amount each month, but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it up because the lack of contact since I started giving is kind of a bummer. I think Cal & Co. do a decent job with what they are given, but it's basically a volunteer job for folks who already have other full-time jobs. Most other schools have a full-time workers on their collective.

I'm actually surprised our NIL program hasn't improved drastically under DVDM. I think he's been fantastic in almost every way, but athletics needs to have a more aggressive and hands-on approach with the NIL collective.
Are you sure the collective is still functioning? Is Cal still involved?

I'd love to hear an explanation on why the Frack money couldn't be used for NIL in basketball. Any program sold on winning would find a way.

Didn't the website used to say who was involved in the collective? Now it's pretty sparse on details.

Believe he is. His son played hockey with my nephew this year. My brother said he was still involved with the university in some capacity, so I'm assuming that's what he meant.

Everything you all are saying rings true with me. The biggest issue is that there is never continuity or consistency. This goes for all rosters at all universities. When a kid can enter the portal in December, collect a paycheck at his new school, and then leave the new school for another place willing to pay him after spring football its just getting ridiculous. There need to be contracts binding players to universities for a set time with payouts for leaving, just like coaches.

Agreed, but he'll end up going somewhere he can still get a nice chunk of change. Could see him ending up somewhere like Dayton, Xavier, or DePaul.

Attended more games than any responsible student should have.
