2025 Basketball Portal
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
It appears to me Falcon basketball will be a developmental program from here on. I’ve been a season ticket holder since I moved back to the area (2004). I missed more games this year than the last five combined. I’m really struggling to see much point continuing on.

If you would have told me 2-3 years ago that the football program would be far more interesting than the basketball program I would have thought you were an idiot.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Take this for what it’s worth. One of my peers at church who is strongly connected to the men’s program said he has been kept in the loop regarding the transfer portal and there is a chance that Campbell and Humphrey return. With Campbell’s JUCO years not counting towards his eligibility, he could opt for one more year in BG to improve his stock. I’m not counting on it by any means but it certainly brings confidence to me that the staff still tries to recruit their own players back.
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
The prices for guards is less than the price for big men. Add in the shooting percentages and Butler is possibly more in demand in the portal than Campbell despite what we know as to who the more impactful MAC player is. Figure out how to make Frack money or a portion used for NIL. Unless it's already being spent for football.
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Many of the players in The portal won’t find homes. I’m sure the coaching staff will field a roster but losing Butler, Campbell, Felt and Humphrey’s will be tough to overcome. Those in my opinion are four of our five starters next year.
Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Given the insanity that NIL and instant transfers has created, how about this insane idea.
Why don't we just sign a developmental contract with an OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, any school with a crap ton on NIL money. Then we work together with those school(s) where they make commitments to kids for big NIL dollars in a year or two down the road if they develop their skills at BG. With the reality that any kid that develops his skills here isn't sticking around anyway, why not fully embrace that and try to get some bigger potential stars to take a year here instead of redshirting at a bigger school.

Like everything else, any sort of agreement like this between schools would be litigated to hell, even if a player signs a contract knowing full well of what they're getting into.Warthog wrote: ↑Mon Apr 14, 2025 7:59 am Given the insanity that NIL and instant transfers has created, how about this insane idea.

There's also the illusion that we're still under that we pretend we're all playing for the same national championship as the big schools in every sport, whereas realistically the highest hope for football and basketball is essentially winning the league and then having a first round exit in the playoff/tournament.
We can still win a national title in hockey. Western Michigan (despite being a member of the NCHC, which is a distinct advantage over where we are in the CCHA) just proved that.
Other than that... it's not realistic to think that could ever happen in other sports. That's part of the draw to FCS football, for me. I was resistant for a long time, but to have a real postseason opportunity and a shot at a real national title... that's tempting.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
Lots of fringe kids going into the portal are making colossal mistakes. They're willingly giving up free tuition to play basketball at a school like this and then they don't find a landing spot. An awful, awful move for their own lives in pursuit of money that isn't there, often by the advice of someone looking to take advantage of them. It's just a truly terrible system we have in place right now. And the NCAA has totally given up on their own responsibility in the situation. I mean, they’re actively ruining people’s lives by not putting rules and guardrails in place.guest44 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 14, 2025 10:04 am Just keep waiting….

I think the blame lies mostly with the reps and agents that are in it for the dollar and don't give a s**t about the actual players. Ejay Greer is a prime example (and he's in the portal again, btw). He has a guy absolutely preying on him with the hopes of getting a cut.mbenecke wrote: ↑Mon Apr 14, 2025 10:09 amLots of fringe kids going into the portal are making colossal mistakes. The other side is kids being unceremoniously dumped in the portal because the coach yanks their spot out from under them. Cuts both ways.

Agree with this. Large group of athletes who will likely not play sports professionally after college. This is their one chance to earn some cash before that reality settles in. Agents are definitely preying on these kids, telling them they can secure them a bag with really only their own personal interests front and center.BillyLP wrote: ↑Mon Apr 14, 2025 10:42 amI think the blame lies mostly with the reps and agents that are in it for the dollar and don't give a s**t about the actual players. I give Tennessee credit for telling Nico to take a hike in football over the weekend. Pretty clear what was up there - an agent and player trying to extort a university into paying an athlete more money because they have no better option within the program. If more schools grew a backbone perhaps a realistic market can be created, however it seems more likely at this moment schools are going to cave for fear of losing a top player to a potential direct competitor.

Re: 2025 Basketball Portal
The coaches are getting smarter to this. Just wait it out. If you are fortunate enough to have someone dish out 1 million per year to win the MAC and lose early in the NCAA tournament, good on them for doing it. All schools would love to have that. If not, it's on the coaches to try to identify the best potential and try to mesh it together. Simon has done that twice with both Hill and Campbell already. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the Frack money has ever gotten this program.

Yes, this is bigger than fans want to admit.TalonsUpPuckDown wrote: ↑Mon Apr 14, 2025 11:04 am The other side is kids being unceremoniously dumped in the portal because the coach yanks their spot out from under them. Cuts both ways.
Many of the "fringe kids" that we would argue are making colossal mistakes are being told to get out. Especially at larger schools...to hit closer to home you think ASU was going to keep Braelon Green there any longer? Nah, he went into the portal almost certainly because they said, "Kid, here's your chance to save face, you won't be playing here"
Pretty sure it happens at the MAC level as well. Gone are the days where a poor recruiting eval meant tying up a roster slot for 4 yrs. As willing as kids are to transfer the coaches are equally as willing to tell them to get lost.
