What a strange tournament it was

Well, our showing in the tournament went nothing like I expected it to. I thought we had a chance to go 2-1 with wins over Western Carolina and Radford and a loss to Virginia Tech, but instead, we went 1-2 with a win over Virginia Tech and losses to Western Carolina and Radford. It kind of boiled down to a very good win and two bad losses. I hated seeing us get pounded by Radford after a win over VT. After being to Radford many times, I never would have imagined the day would come I'd see us get pounded by that school in any sport, let alone basketball. Oh well.

Well, the good thing is, we got a win down there. It would have been a very tough trip to go down there and come back winless. But you can bet that despite a win over Virginia Tech, the coaching staff and players can’t bet happy with a pair of losses to WCU and Radford. But, we can now get back to the basics, get a couple home games in the next few weeks, and more importantly, get healthy. We should have Dusan and Wright back in the next few weeks and that will help us a lot. And if we’re really fortunate, we could possibly get Sullivan and Moten eligible, and that would be huge.

Great win over VaTech and two bad losses. Couldn't imagine Radford beating us, and the loss to WCU that without 3 coaches getting T'd up would have been the 2-1 you were expecting.

We learned some things in this tourney that should help us down the stretch.

1.) Have to focus on committing less fouls (both regular and Technical)
2.) The entire team can't be so tenative in taking shots. (Floyd learned that on Saturday)
3.) Samarco can shoot jump shots and drive to the hoop.
4.) Freshman can contribute (Clemmons & Marschall had quality minutes)
5.) We can play a fast paced, up tempo game with a team like VaTech
6.) Lefeld has shown tremendous improvement over last year
7.) Robinson can handle the point without any problem
8.) Samarco, Floyd, Soler, & Marshcall need to take more shots

It is going to be an up and down season with such an inexperienced squad, but look for them to make great improvements before we get to the conference games.

Zero assists and four turnovers today. Season total: five assists and seven turnovers. That isn't even close to what you need out of a PG. A good PG will be 2 to 1 ratio of assists to turnovers.

Nothing against Robinson, but he is not a true point guard. He doesn't have a good outside shot, cannot make free throws, and does not 'drive and dish' like you would expect from a PG. I don't know what they really saw in him when they recruited him.

His HS career was impressive. He CAN shoot, he just doesn't. I think he simply hasn't found himself on the college level yet. I think we'll see him come into his own over the next few weeks.

I think he can be a serviceable PG...for which you don't have to be a good shooter...but he isn't there yet. He doesn't get the ball to guys in a position to shoot, and he turns the ball over against pressure, the two things he really does have to do. I don't think I'm thinking he can handle the point "no question" yet. He is a project, like our entire team.
