and even he recognized that we have the foundation laid for a great team next year
Great? Come on now.

I hate it when people over use the word great when referring to sports teams or players. It happens here in Cleveland on a daily basis. The Browns never had any "great" teams in the past 40 years. Yet you hear people talking about how great the Cardiac Kids were, or the Bernie teams were. Those weren't great teams. You could argue that they were good teams or possibly very good teams...but not great. If they were great there would be a couple of Lombardi Trophies in the lobby at the stadium. Beyond Ozzie Newsome and Omar Viquel, I challenge you to name a "great" Cleveland ballplayer in the last 40 years from any sport? And, don't give me name of someone who played a year or two here at the end of his career (i.e. Eddie Murray). I am talking about someone who became a "great" player while wearing a Cleveland uniform.

IMO, the Falcons have a chance to be a contender for the top half of the conference next year. Nothing more. We should be better, but we'll still have the worst point guard in the league, a center with foot problems who can only play 15-20 minutes a game, and one of the most unathletic rostes in teh conference.

I love Dan as a person and as a coach, but I just wish he could recruit and keep more athletic players.

I'm not an Indians fan, but I think Manny Ramirez definitely qualifies as well.

As for the Browns, I think Bernie was pretty great, but injuries shortened his career. I also think Clay Matthews was great and is deserving of the hall. Of course I'm incredibly biased and those are the players from my childhood, so of course I put them on a pedastal :)

LeBron...Certainly looks like he could be but I can call him "one of the greats" after only 2 1/2 years and no winning seasons.

Albert Belle...Very good, but not great. Average defensive player at best. Didn't sustain his power numbes very long. 4-5 years? Factor in his attitude and off-the-field problems and I can't use "great" in the same sentence with him.

Manny Ramirez...Certainly a great hitter...maybe the best I have ever seen personally . But absolutely brutal with the leather and on the basepaths. Manny is probably right on the line of greatness and will be a hard one for the hall of fame voters.

I'm not sure how you're defining "great", but I wonder in terms of baseball where Manny, Thome, Lofton, and Joe Carter rate?

This is coming from someone who doesn't particularly care for the Indians, but I would still say the above guys are all slighlty better than just "good."

Joe Charbeneau (or however you spell it). He removed a tattoo with a razor blade and could open a beer bottle with his eye socket. That makes him great in my book.

Albert Belle was not only a prolific power hitter but a feared batter with men on base and could hit doubles too- became the first guy in AL history to hit 50 HR and 50 doubles. He was the most feared batter in the league. Sure it was short but football fans will remind you Gayle Sayers career was short.

Niekro falls under the Eddie Murray rule outlined above.

Joe Carter along with Julio Franco are a couple of guys that got ZERO respect in Cleveland but once they moved on they were correctly recognized. Franco was a solid hitter batting for average and enough power to be considered for MVP voting but since he played in Cleveland. . . you know the rest.

Good pick up on Clay Matthews hammb, talk about dependable, the guy played forever and was like a coach on the field. As he got older he used his smarts to keep himself as an impact player.
