BG @ Akron on FSNO on Tuesday
I don't even know what to say so I'll just throw out some random thoughts. Floyd was good and Wright made some 3's when it didn't matter to make his stat line look good. We got nothing out of Samarco and Dakich didn't play him much in the second half. He must have done something to tick him off, but I don't care how bad he's going, I want that kid in the game.
I think Moten and Clements were bright spots in limited duty. Moten looked lost in the offense, but I thought he did a very good job defensively. Clements made a couple nice moves to the bucket and made a nice mid-range jumper. Clements must be god awful in practice or have a terrible attitude because I see no reason why he is the 11th man on this team.
Marschall showed some real toughness. Anybody see that black eye? I like the kid's moves, but he needs to start finishing at the bucket. Reghi made a comment in the first half about how our big guys need to go up and dunk the ball. Apparently, Reghi doesn't realize that they need a wide open court to do that. Lefeld just can't do it with his feet and Marschall doesn't appear to have the hops to do that. Regardless of that, we need a higher percentage of layups to go in the bucket from the big guys
I really think that Steven Wright needs to be in the starting lineup. It seems like we are consistently behind at the start of games. Although the comebacks are fun, I would rather be in a close game throughout.

After I made the earlier post, I thought that maybe Samarco was woozy after the elbow. I hope he is alright for the stretch run because we obviously need him to play at a very high level to compete with the MAC's big boys.OptionQB wrote:Todd stated that the bigs were 3/16 from the field . . . Wow!
LaMonta said that they felt Samarco may have a possible concussion from receiving an elbow and stated that "we have a few games left that we feel we can win, so we thought it was better to focus on those."

Just got in. Tired. Never seen the Falcons fail to finish around the basket like we did tonight. Marschall has awesome hops and mobility, but just hasn't been finishing. Hopefully, a summer in the weight room will add upper body strength. That will help his ability to finish around the basket and avoid foul trouble.
Akron looks very good. They're my hands down favorite to win the MAC tournament.

FEAR THE BIRD!

We just got back, another game, another loss. I pretty much agree with what was already posted. We just got killed on the boards, they took and hit a lot more free throws than we did, and we missed what seemed like a ton of shots from point-blank range in the paint. Not to pick on Lefeld, but bad feet or not, he’s gotta hit those shots he missed tonight. It seemed everything he put up he thought was going to be blocked and he missed little chip shots badly and was putting up shots that were way too hard. Floyd played a heckuva game, again, and worked his tail off. This kid could turn out to be our Most Improved Player this year if he keeps this up. Seriously, think of how far he’s come along in just the last month. Samarco was MIA tonight well before he got laid out and that spelled bad news for BG, he just could never get it going and was essentially a non-factor and we can not afford to have that. Wright played a nice game, but by the time he heated up it was too little too late, and Soler never got much going either. Marschall got battered again, but I love his heart. He really could be a good one down the road for us. I did like some of what I saw from our bench tonight too. It was nice seeing Moten and Clements get some minutes and I about fell outta my seat when Robinson scored a pair of buckets including a three. I actually thought Clements had the best (and maybe only) drive to the basket for us on the night. He took an inbound pass near half court, dribbled down the side and then went hard to the basket. He got fouled and went to the line where he split a pair, but it was awesome to see someone attack the rim for once instead of a dribble-drive, stop, ball-fake and pass-out. It was nice to see Guerin scratch tonight too.
But midway through the first half, we just already seemed done for the night and out of the game and never challenge the rest of the night. The game just seemed to have the feel of an exhibition game for BG, like we were just going through the motions and getting some guys time on the floor…..and it probably wasn’t a coincidence that it felt that way.
Other than that, man, this has been a tough four-year stretch for BG hoops. It just seems like we’ve been under a dark, dark cloud and when it has rained, it’s poured. We appear well on our way to our third losing season in four years, and I just have a strong feeling our streak of getting to Cleveland is about to end. On top of that, all the losses, defections, transfers, low attendance, etc., I just can’t stand seeing us in this light anymore. But on the other hand, I see SO much promise with this relatively young and somewhat inexperienced team, and I get so excited to think about what “could be” in the next year or two for BG hoops. Not to count out this season already because anything could happen, but we could, COULD, have a very good team in the near future if we can finally stop the transfers, defections, etc.. If we return everyone but Soler and get Sullivan on board and add our recruits to everyone that is playing now, we could be just fine. But if we continue to lose more players, we’re never going to break out from underneath this dark cloud we are playing under. I can only hope and pray we are on track.

Good post, '33. This was one of the most insightful and reasoned posts that I have ever seen from you, and I agree with just about all of it. The only thing that I will say is, be positive about the transfer issue! I still maintain that the ammount of transfers that we have had lately is very much an aberration and most likely will not continue.BGSU33 wrote:We just got back, another game, another loss. A minor point of correction, though (and believe me, it is not a point I like making), our streak of making it to Cleveland ended last year, if I recall correctly.

Thanks. But as for Cleveland, yes, we did get there last year, we beat Ball State in a nailbitter at home in the first round and then got crushed by Miami once we got to The Gund. It was a short-lived stay, but we got there. And about the transfers and defections, I hope you are right that we've seen the end of most of that.Bleeding Orange wrote:Good post, '33. All I'm going to say is that I was sickened to make a 2 hour trip to watch that game. We have the potential to play at a higher level and we just die after awhile. It's hard to watch.
I'm sick of MAC officiating. I don't care about fouls called on us, I'm talking both ways. I can't tolerate it anymore.

Brutal game to watch on the tube. I love this Marschall kid... he played a tough game, and the black eye? Whoa. Floyd played very well. If it wasn't for Floyd, we probably would have lost by 30. It was a painful game to watch. We never seemed to be in it after the first 15 minutes. It was nice to see some of the guys who usually don't get PT get on the floor.
Metz, I thought Akron got away with a few too many fouls...I know they were physical but....
Give credit to the Zips....they are a solid team and are now 25-1 at home the last 2 years. I like their chances to win it all.
Put it behind us and let's get ready for Wright State.
GO FALCONS!

I like how he goes to the rim. I like how he gets open. I like his hustle and effort. I also like how he can run the floor when given the opportunity.Falconfreak90 wrote:Brutal game to watch on the tube. I love this Marschall kid... he played a tough game, and the black eye? Whoa.
What I don't like is the fact that he's way to undersized to play the post positions in this league. He has upside, but he absolutely must add at least 20 pounds of muscle to his frame this offseason. He looks like the type of kid that is willing to do whatever it takes, so that's good, because right now he gets thrown around like a rag doll.
He fouls a ton because he's much weaker than the guys he's guarding and they easily get position on him. He also gets a lot of good looks at the basket, but cannot finish because he's just not strong enough. Strength is apparent in rebounding situations as well.
I like his potential & I like his attitude, but if he cannot add some serious muscle he'll never improve much in this league. He's just too small right now, unfortunately we need him this year because we have no other options.
The novelty has worn off.Warthog wrote:Just throwing this out there, and I am not suggesting it was a reason for the results at all, but how does Pat Phillips go from starting the last few games to playing just 4 minutes?
Earlier bringing in Phillips added some emotional intensity, and teams didn't know what to do with him. Now that they've seen him a few times they know that he shouldn't scare them.
He's just not very good, and shouldn't be anything more than the 10th guy on the team.
