but I'll take it over Savage Hall any day of the week. Savage reminds me too much of UC's Shoemaker Center/Fifth Third Arena, a place that myself and many other UC do not likegorocketsut wrote:please Anderson arena is like the ymca of the maccowboyjoe wrote:Toledo's facilities aren't better than ours?

Irrelevant. I said I'm tired of the excuses, whether they're valid or not.
In any event, you can't reasonably say at this point that Dakich is being hampered by any environmental factor at BG. Curt Miller is working with the exact same circumstances as Dan, in a sport harder to recruit because there are fewer good players to go around, and he has won over 30 straight MAC games and 2 (soon to be 3) championships. I've never heard a single lady on that team bitch about facilities.
Given the success of the women, nobody is going to convince me that other MAC schools have some kind of advantage over BG.

Facilities are one of the major recruiting factors that help in getting talent to come to a university. The money that some universities are putting into this idea is amazing. Toledo is commited to this now that they have plans to renovate Savage Hall. I have family members that went to bg and all of them say that something must be done for a new arena. How many potential recruits are going to want to play in an arena that resembles, for some, their high school gym? Look around the MAC, most of the schools are moving towards this idea. I am not talking just talking about one school, but if you want to bring in talent you have to have the facilities that will invite these recruits here. If you want to compete with the Big Ten boys, you have to have good facilities bottom line.
With the addition of the Sebo Center, you guys are on your way. Best of luck!

I agree with the spirit of your post. But, there is a right and a wrong way to it. If you've been to an EMU game you can see an example of a new facility that is a great multi purpose facility but a poor venue for college basketball.UTRIPLETS wrote:Facilities are one of the major recruiting factors that help in getting talent to come to a university. How is NIU's facility?
all bowling green
Funny you would mention EMU. I attended a game there last year when UT played them. Very nice facility but there were more Toledo fans there than EMU fans. You're right that there is more to it than facilities, like having a winning tradition and being competitive year in and year out. Certainly, these too influence recruiting.
Actually I love EMU's arena, and think it's a nice place to watch a basketball game. The problem there, IMO, is that they cannot put enough people in the stands to give it any noise or atmosphere.
I don't delude myself into believing that Anderson is a great building. It's a good place to watch a game because you can be so close, and I love the atmosphere that can be created there with only 2000 people or less. Still, we do need to upgrade our facilities in the not-too-distant future. I think it would help immensely in getting better players and in getting more fans.
Still, I find it hard to believe that the quality of the men's basketball program right now is as good as we can expect simply because of our facilities. As J4H mentioned women's basketball is generally more difficult to recruit with so many fewer top notch players, but we seem to be doing pretty well in that department, no?
Anderson needs to be replaced, but it, alone, is not what is holding back our men's basketball program.

Haamb hit the nail on the head. We could have the best arena in the country with all the bells and whistles possible and we would not see the quality of our team rise. We need a coach the players believe in. We need a return to fundamental basketball. We need an end to all of these transfers. We need cummunity support to be restored. Then, when all of that has started to take hold, do we need a new arena. The timing is perfect to get this started. With a new coach hopefully comes the return to fundamentals we need as well as a coach the team can believe in. I firmly believe we will see a new basketball arena and renovated ice arena in the next 5-7 years. The goal should be to have an average attendance of 4000/game for the men in that time frame. Then I can justify an arena of 8000 with the option to close off some of the space for different size crowds. It all starts with the coaching change!

BG drawing 4000 people per game is unlikely. MAC men's hoops has slipped behind alot of "mid-major" conferences whose resources go to basketball first. MVC, CAA, are prime examples of how the MAC has passed quickly. Heck, I would consider the Horizon to be at the same level at this point. It's a one bid conference in which the conference as a whole has slipped. Comparing our women's program to our men's program is useless in my opinion. Rather as fan, I will enjoy the women's teams success and realize that years like this current year might never be duplicated.
