Reasons why Merf wouldn't jump at a chance to come to BG reminds me about what Greg Marshall did here in Charleston this past summer and his comments. Marshall was a much loved assistant to the legendary John Kresse at College of Charleston. Marshall got passed up the last time the position opened 3 or 4 years ago but Marshall has since created a "Gonzaga of the East" at Winthrop. Well last summer CofC parted ways with their coach and everyone tabbed Marshall as the logical choice this time around.
Marshall accepted, their was a love fest in the media talking about how the favorite son of Kresse has returned. Only they had the presser and all the hoopla without one major thing: Marshall's signature. He flip-flopped and returned to Winthrop where he will be dancing in the coming weeks.
But what reminds me of why Merf might stay away is the reason Marshall said he had a change of heart. He said walking in to the CofC arena was just like it was 15 years ago when he was an assistant- not in a sentimental way though. He said they were still using the same outdated equipment for practices, the weight room was exactly the same. He had been gone some 10 years but nothing was upgraded at CofC. Painfully, I would think Merf would feel the same way walking in to Anderson Arena.
