I think we should take out a HUGE loan and offer insane money to Tubby Smith. Kentucky fans seem to hate him because he's black, but he's a damn good coach. Perhaps if we threw a ton of cash at him he'd rather get back to less of a pressure cooker? I know, it's a total pipe dream, I'm just sayin'...

I think Michigan will pursue Tubby Smith if he gets fired from Kentucky. But...if by some miracle...and it would be a miracle...Tubby Smith became the coach here...I'm 100% positive, I would be so excited when they made the announcement, I would without a doubt, s**t my pants, and not even care.

All I can say is that The 2 top dogs for the open coaching position are Ron Niekamp (University of Findlay's Coach) and Tommy Amaker (formerly of Michigan)

Amaker just left a program with antiquated facilities and minimal support from the University, alumni, students and the local community.

He left because he's a crappy coach and got fired.

I'd MUCH rather go find some young assistant than hire a retread who has failed in the past. HC experience is less important to me than finding somebody with fresh, new ideas.

I was very very surprised to come across another name in the last day or two. Ray Giacoletti recently resigned at Utah after only 3 seasons. He has a winning record overall, after struggling this season. His overall record is outstanding after having led Eastern Washington to the NCAAs a few years back before going to Utah.

I think the Ute nation is caught up with catching lightning in a bottle like they did with Urban and he was a victim of that. It can't be the easiest thing in the world to lure 17-19 year old kids to the tropical weather and party city known as Salt Lake City. I don't believe any other extenuating issues are there, ie family/personal problems or anything like that . . .

I think he's worth a look. Besides why not find a guy from a "larger" program who has recently taken a huge buyout, ie Amaker, Gillen, etc ??? to offset our salary which we all know is on the lower end of D-1 athletics.

I wonder if Niekamp would be interested. He's gotta be in has late fifties. I doubt he is the age of coach we are looking for.

There was a letter to the editor in the sports section of the Sentinel Tribune last night asking for former Owens CC coach Jim Welling to get the job. I believe he is in his late forties now, but left Owens in a bit of a scandal in the last year. Not sure he would be a real candidate either.

Jim Welling and Ron Niekamp??? They are in such high demand, they have spent their entire careers at Owens and Findlay. These would be two horrendous hires. This same guy wrote this same editiorial 5 years ago during the Dakich debacle. Yet Welling is not even coaching now, ridiculous.

I thought the intention of not renewing DD's contract was to bring in a GOOD coach who could recruit D1 college athletes, not coaches who will be using canes in 10 years and have no experience in D1 ball. These 2 would be the worst hires possible for what were trying to accomplish (Plus you don't know how much Welling is planning on taking from the SEBO fund?? 8) ). I agree with Hammb (I can't believe I just said that) that we need to go after some young assistant in a top program.

Two red flags:

1) He has no ties to our recruiting base in the Midwest
2) He did nothing at Utah after Andrew Bogut left the program.

Utah's expectations are out of whack and he probably should have been given more time to reload, but I'm still skeptical of coaches who take over solid programs and make them worse.

BTW, Option, think our friend Mr. Groce might be getting that head coaching itch right about now and be willing to accept less money than he was offered last year for a chance to run his own show in the state of Ohio?

How about Pete Guillen? He had a nice run at Xavier adn had some success at Virginia. Plus, he knows the recruiting circut here in Ohio and the Midwest.
