Do you remember that Kent team? They could have won 25 games without any coach. Heath did a fine job taking them to the Elite 8, but his greatest contribution was laying a solid foundation for susbseqent years with then-assistant Jim Christian taking over and sustaining their success in the conference.

I'll throw another name out there with Kent connections: Rob Murphy. He was the Detroit Free Press Metro High School Coach of the Year at Crockett Tech, coached at Kent under Christain and was scooped up by Jim Boeheim at Syracuse and installed as one of their two off-campus recruiters. He doesn't have the experience of Louis Orr (who also coached and played at SU) but he's worth a look.

No...that is my exact point. Gary Waters put the foundation in place, not Stan Heath. Heath was Izzo's assistant at Michigan State when Waters was doing the real work on the Kent State program. Heath had a nice ride for one year. Yes, you can argue that he took them to the Elite 8 without messing it up. But, that team was poised to make a run in the tournament no matter who was coaching.

I get that point about the tourney run. But there have been lots of great MAC teams that didn't make a run like that. He might have contributed something to the effort.

Well if you are judging Heaath's accomplishments as a coach, do you look at the one year of success he had with someone else's team or do you look at the last several years at Arkansas where he had the chance to build his own program? I put much more stock in the latter when evaluating his coaching abilities.

He's a good coach with the other guys recruits. Let's see how he is when his own guys are playing. Then I'llmake my opinion of him known.

After all, Blackney was a great coach with the kids Moe brought in.

Meyer just won the freakin' National Championship and you still can't concede that he is a great coach?

And follows it up with the best recruiting class in the land.

The only thing Gregg Brandon has ever been able to do is win with Urban's boys.

The fact is Urban Meyer is a fantastic coach, and his recruits are as good as you could ever hope to sign at the schools he's been at. It's laughable to say you're withholding judgement on him, but whatever. Some people still think Gregg Brandon & Scott Paluch are good coaches...too bad those people seem to be in positions of power...

Stan Heath isn't a great choice. I think C. Martin Asst. from Purdue is the choice. A good one at that! Young and full of energy, with an added plus being from Chicago.

I am not sure why Heath wouldn't be a great choice. He was just let go from Arkansas after three 20+ win seasons in a row, but expectations are extremely high there. He coached the best MAC team in history in 2002. He also has recruiting experience in the area, since he was an assistant at Michigan State as well as BGSU. While at Michigan State he was part of a National Championship, and at least 2 final fours. I am not sure BGSU has ever hired a coach with these kind of previous credentials in any sport (possibly Jerry York, I don't know what he did before BGSU) With all of that said, I don't even know if Heath would be interested-he might see it as a step down.

I think C. Martin would be a good choice as well. He has no head coaching experience, but is young and could bring some new life and energy. Recruiting Chicago is a plus as well.

I am pretty sure he has to take a step down after being fired.

Coach Heath

Post by astacey34 »

I was just have been reading some things people have been saying about Coach Heath. Just a few comments, cause I don´t think he is coming to BG, I actually know he is not! But for people to say he is not a good choice or a good choice, just baffles me. I read that he won with other people´s players and didn´t do nothing at Arkansas with his own players. Well got news for you, went from 9, 12, 18, 22, 21 wins at Arkansas and two consecutive NCAA tournaments is not bad, for a program that was in turmoil with the Nolan Richardson situation, and also that plays in the SEC! And he had a great year at Kent, he had to be doing something right. The made it to the final 8. That takes coaching, yest it takes good players but it take coaching also. Yes Gary Waters left him talent but it is easy to mess talent up, when I was in school Marshall had the most talent in the league hands down but didn´t win. Me and Esterkamp were left over from Coach Larranaga, does that mean our championship withCoach Dakich doesn´t count cause we were somebody´s recruits?

Couldn't agree more. But that's without any coach. That's easy. Doing it with BO as coach, well.... ;-)

Larry Coker started out about the same way at Miami winning a National Championship and being named National Coach of the Year his first two years, while landing top recruit after top recruit. Yet six years after his astounding success, he is out of a job. I don't see anything wrong with saying Meyer is perhaps the best at the quick turnaround of programs, but it is still remains to be seen whether he can sustain a program for any length of time.
