If the IU position does fall into Dan's lap I would line up to say congrats. However, I would also wonder if Coach Stone would also have to decide to stay at BG or move up to a bigger program at IU. Coach Stone would be a big loss for us in my mind. Hopefully Dan gets the job, does well, and leaves Coach Stone alone...

I try to avoid IU fans.

Though I have found an email to someone who has posted in this thread dated 10/15/07 saying that if Sampson goes down hard enough, I could see DD as head coach at IU. Not necessarily because he'd be a first choice, but because he's got D1 experience, he's an alum in his "dream job" (if not scenario), and if there are long term sanctions/probations, it would be like a free audition for all parties involved. You're not likely to bring in a difference making coach if his hands are tied with recruiting limits and no postseason for too long. Matta pulled it off at OSU, but that was a one-year deal that allowed him to stockpile open scholarships to bring in Oden and as many friends as he wanted to play with, for the most part.

At this point, unless they ban themselves for a year and can Sampson, I can't imagine IU getting away without at least a few less scholarships to give over the next couple years. DD can go in, work for relatively cheap (pay him in "sunshine"...and candy-striped pants, so to speak) and if he does decent, then give him the job when the probation wraps up.

DD would be a logical choice. My guess, is that if he got the shot IU could run the tournament.

DD leaving town is looking more and more like the best move for him and us. Louis Orr is a legitimate COY candidate.

If he is named interim head coach (over Ray McCallum), there's a 95% chance he won't get the full-time job. The alumni will demand a bigger name. They already went down the Bobby Knight assistant road with Mike Davis and it was frustrating for both parties.

DD is a great guy but a coach coming off multiple losing records in the MAC isn't going to be handed one of the 5 best jobs in college basketball no matter how deep his ties are to the school.

My thoughts exactly. I loved Dan when he was here and supported him till the end...........but this program just needed a change. Dan now has a chance for his dream job.

And we have a coach, who I believe, will be the guy that takes us dancing in march. Not this year, maybe not next year, but he's got us on the path.

Which is, I believe, exactly what I said when he left here.

Dan can still coach, and he'll get another head job someday. He may very well be successful in that endeavor. But he was never going to be successful again here. Not after the WVU fiasco. It changed the culture of his locker room and he was never able to regain control.

I agree with Drew as well. I loved Dan when he was here but this program sorely needed a change. I am ecstatic with what Coach Orr has done already.

But I do not believe that Davis was an IU grad. Folks in Indiana remember the game against Jordan and Dan shutting him down. Dan bleeds IU.

I think the IU faithful can get over the "Return from Morgantown Debacle" a lot easier than BG fans.

Transfer that is a good point. IU fans seem to want "one of their own". DD is still loved for the way he played the game.

And don't forget... he has experience as an IU assistant during the Knight era.

My dream scenario has Dan taking over as Interim Head Coach for the rest of this season and taking the Hoosiers to the Final Four. Then Knight comes BACK to IU and has DD as his #1 assistant next season, running the table and saying only three words at every post-game press conference. "Screw Myles Brand!"
