The B1G wanted Rutgers for one reason and one reason only - the B1G Network. The B1G Network charges a higher fee for states that have a B1G institution. They get like 10 cents a customer in non-B1G states and a $1.14 in B1G states.

That's the case for full membership. With 6 teams and 32 games allowed to be played, that leaves roughly 12 non-conference games. The majority of schools will only have 4-6 non-conference games available to them, depending on the Alaska exemptions. Scheduling that many non-conference games will turn into a nightmare once they realize there is nobody available to fill their schedules. Expanding to 8 teams would ease their scheduling. While it may be all about the $$$$, they will make more money with a full schedule.
