The media loves to play the "overlooked" angle, but it's not like they found him playing pickup basketball somewhere. He was a decorated, All-American JUCO player that subsequently received a full Division I basketball scholarship at a school playing in the 12th rated RPI conference in the country where he started for three years and earned multiple accolades. National media types constantly playing the "overlooked" card is insulting to BG and MAC basketball in general, where multiple NBA players have come from.

I agree. The writer is trying to inflate the importance of his "journalistic discovery" for his own benefit. These days, talented MAC players simply do not slip under the radar. There is so much interconnectivity among coaches, players, scouts, etc., that an obvious NBA talent at a MAC school gets exposed quickly. (Holmes is not an "obvious" NBA talent - he has significant holes to fill.)

Unheralded by the national media? yep. Unheralded by scouts? no.... he got invited to Portsmouth and Chicago, they didn't invite home there to review the hotel breakfast room. Unheralded by BGSU? yes... they listed him at 6-8 when he plays at 6-10. Who lists their players shorter than they are?

Where the heck is everybody? Lets celebrate. First time a BG player has been drafted in nearly 20 years?
Congrats Richaun. You will be great.

I'm happy for Richaun. Great guy. This is an excellent opportunity for him and for BGSU.
ROLL ALONG!!!
Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
Not a fan of where he got drafted. Loaded with young talent at the big man positions. At the time being they got:
Joel Embiid
Nerlins Noel
Thomas Robinson
Jahlil Okafor
Robert Covington
Thats 4 lotto picks (All top 5) plus a guy who averaged nearly 14 a game last year and all are under 24. I dont see it as a great situation unless a player or two gets moved. They also have a few other young guys vying for that position that I didnt mention.

Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
If the 2014 draft is a good indicator, early second round players max out at a $500,000 salary with about half of that guaranteed.
Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
I was REALLY hoping he would have been taken one spot ahead of where he was selected at #36 by Minnesota instead because that pick was dealt to Cleveland. I would have loved to see him end up with the Cavs instead of the 76ers. But with that said, I'm extremely happy and excited for him and loved seeing BG back in the draft.
GO BG!!!

Re: Holmes looking like a pro...
The Sixers are a mess, but what that means for Holmes is ambiguous:
-Holmes won't compete with Okafor or Noel for PT, as they are pure 5s.
-Embiid has new complications with foot.
-Thomas Robinson is a floor-bound position defender and rebounder with a different skill set than Holmes
-Who the hell is Covington?
So, his potential impact as a rookie is better than it might seem.
However, the Sixers will remain miserable unless they sign some very significant shooters and facilitators during free agency. The Sixers' moves have made very little sense. Playing in a chaotic, 20-win NBA environment in not an auspicious way to begin a pro career. Hopefully, Holmes can make the most of his minutes by defending and rebounding consistently while developing his perimeter shot. Holmes is a kid with a good head and a good work ethic. He can make something very positive out of this situation.
