Falcons downed by Western Michigan
ben reed
why does this guy have to admire every shot that he takes? is it bad that a part of me hoped that he was hurt when he wound up in the bleachers? why did he have to emerge from the locker room with his finger high in the air after half time? why did ben not listen to the ref at that time when he told ben to calm down and not to talk to the officials?
(sorry to start that post a la a terry pluto column...)
anywho, from across the court i couldn't tell, but the word was that he threw a punch at germaine to start the halftime melee. can any of any of you that were more "on top" of the situation either confirm or refute this?

What really happened
Here is what really happened when the players were funneling into the tunnel:
Ben Reed was running his mouth like he always does, and John Marion, Administrative Assistant, said to Reed, "You're not going to do anything. Walk away." Reed then laughed in his face and started to walk towards the locker room.
Out of nowhere Steven Wright threw a forearm into the back of Ricky Willis, sending him into the scorer's table. Then, my friends, it was on.
BG players threw their towels at Western players, while the coaches were attempting to break up the hoopla.
Artie Pepelea tried to ascend the scorer's table, but was denied access by the officials. Kinda funny, really. I love Artie. Who doesn't?
Sadly enough, Western's watergirl caught a nasty fist to the face, perhaps by Germain Fitch, who was throwing them left and right. On the other hand, Germain does love the ladies. The girl was put out of commission for the second half, leaving the Western players to fend for their own hydration. (We still lost
)
So, it was Steve who started it, but there was a lot of shiat going on at once. Was he provoked? It could have been the hard foul, or it could have been Reed's repulsive face, we may never know. My source for this was seated at the scorers table.
Just thought you all would like to know the goods.

Thanks for the info. Given that, Steven Wright and Germain should have been given the boot for the second half, along with anybody else that threw a punch. There is no place for that garbage in college basketball. I hope Coach Dakich uses this opportunity to send a strong message to those involved in the situation. It was definitely humorous to see Artie up on the scoreboard, though.

Great Game (besides the scrum)
7 of us made the trip down from Kalamazoo, we were really treated to a great game.
Everyone who sat by us (Mostly BGSU fans) were hospitable to us - they complimented our enthusiasm, it was just a great time up in GA. You are all welcome to come watch us at University Arena in KZOO.
Your arena, pretty much what everyone described it as, but what you didn't tell everyone is that your student section seems to be in a daze throughout the entire game. If your students would step up and make some noise that place would be impossible to play in. The students have a great location, a HUGE section, but it seemed like their heart was elsewhere. Whoever wrote the "Joe Reitz is soft" sign: WHATS UP?!?!
Until this game I never knew how hated Ben Reed was across the MAC, listening to your post game show (which I had to chime in on) apparently you aren't the only ones who aren't his biggest fans. We obviously love the guy, he is the ultimate team guy and an emotional leader.
How did you guys miss 4 dunks in the first 10 minutes? I was taken aback by it, your guys go to the hole willingly at first, can't believe they didn't finish, never seen anything like it.
good luck this year see you guys down the road in OUR HOUSE and we all know whats happens in OUR HOUSE

I have NO idea who the poster was that said Steve Wright started the whole mele, because it was Ben Reed. There are several good optomitrists in town!!!
The REAL problem is that the referee's were taking a nap at center court, pating each othe on the back, rather than keeping the teams separate and watching what was going on, when Reed threw the forearm or punch to start the whole ordeal.
The officials were simply HORRIBLE.......and I did NOT say they had a negative influence on the score for us.......they were just plain bad, lost control, and had many, many BAD calls both ways. They should have just left the TV guys call the game, because they couldn't get ANYTHING right!!!!!
It is really time for the MAC to do something about all of their officials, including basketball and baseball, before it gets completely out of hand, and I think it is time for all MAC fans to demand better.

Mike from Western.........Thanks for the compliments about BG's hospitable fans. I agree with you that our falcon supporters who sit next to the visitors seating section are very polite to the visiting teams.
I do wish that those fans and the others seated on the western side of the arena would get a little bit more into it. They always support us (the cheerleaders) but sometimes when we call simple chants like (Let's go falcons) not everyone yells with us! I have been a spectator in the stands and I know that I usually watch the game instead of cheering, but i think if more people yelled and stood up every now and then, it would make a difference. Anderson Arena is a tough place for visiting teams to play in regardless of the noise, but we can always be louder!!

Always there to cheer on the Falcons.......GO BG!!!!

Actually, ialone, Grant brought some pictures back from Ypsi last week, and I would beg to differ. Eastern is actually one of the better looking dance teams in the MAC. I've never seen Western's, but I imagine they are no slouches, either.

Don't get me wrong, there were some very attractive members, but in person, if my memory holds, they were not that great on the whole. But I'm sure they are nice people...Bleeding Orange wrote:Actually, ialone, Grant brought some pictures back from Ypsi last week, and I would beg to differ.
