NCAA - Buffalo
Re: NCAA - Buffalo
And Hammb, besides Kent State, what do all those teams have in common. They do not have a D1 football program nor do they have a D1 hockey program. I have said this for over 10 years. BG has too many D1 program to support. Drop down to D2 in some sports and put an emphasis more on basketball. Everybody keeps arguing with me but I think I'm correct. Major programs can support all these D1 programs. Smaller mid-major schools cannot.

Given our history in hockey, I cannot see/justify dropping that sport. Hell, they consistently outdraw hoops. No, you'll never get much national publicity for it, but I think we can afford to keep playing it.gmartin wrote:And Hammb, besides Kent State, what do all those teams have in common. Football is just such a cash drain. I love BG football. For years I never would have fathomed NOT doing whatever it took to stay at the highest level of college football. But what I've seen over the past 15 years is watching MAC basketball fall further and further behind where it should be while pumping more and more money into football. And for that football money what have we gotten? Embarrassed in a couple national bowl games, and that's about it? I'm sure MAC football revenues dwarf the other sports, but so do the expenditures.
Probably me being selfish as a bigger basketball than football fan, but I think the money would have been better spent focusing on basketball. Of course it may be too late now.
Re: NCAA - Buffalo
I wasn't saying drop hockey I'm just saying most mid-major power houses do not have football and hockey programs at the D1 level. I would drop BGSU football to D2 in a heartbeat if that means being in the NCAA tournament in a regular basis in basketball. In D2 football we could still play Toledo every year as a rival game. It's not like we're drawing more than 10,000 a game in football. What would draw more a game against Kent State or Buffalo or a game against wisconsin-whitewater. If you seriously had to think about that then that should give us our answer as to what division we should play in.

Re: NCAA - Buffalo
Are you talking moving football to 1-AA (FCS) or actual Division 2? Because there is no chance in hell Toledo would play us in football if we became a Division 2 school. Also would it even be possible to just move football to Division 2 and keep everything else in Division 1. I feel like we would have to move all sports to Division 2, except hockey and become like some of our fellow WCHA schools. I think staying in D1 but dropping to a FCS conference would be the more realistic of the two optionsgmartin wrote:I wasn't saying drop hockey I'm just saying most mid-major power houses do not have football and hockey programs at the D1 level. Re: NCAA - Buffalo
Speaking of Buffalo, Buffalo women beat #6 USF 102-79 today. CMU women won too. MAC combined is 3-0 So far in tournament. Only conference undefeated!!! Go Bulls men team. Beat Kentucky.

Nobody's dropping a division. End of story.

Re: NCAA - Buffalo
I didn't say we were. I was going on what Hammb said and stated it's hard to have successful programs at a mid major level when you field all D1 teams. Gonzaga doesn't have a D1 football or hockey. Neither does Butler. The power house mid major basketball programs don't have D1 football or basketball. If BG wants to be a player in basketball on a consistent basis they need to think of dropping some D1 sports, mostly noticeably football to FCS.MarkL wrote:Nobody's dropping a division. End of story.

FYI,
Wisconsin Whitewater is a D-3 school. Hopefully, you’re not dropping us that far.

I would drop football from D1 without question. I don't know how you can vote republican and still support a football team at a school like this that just bleeds funds from the average student who will never attend a game at BG.

Don't want to get political...but this is my general argument as well.Globetrotter wrote:I would drop football from D1 without question. I agree. I am certainly not Republican but I get the fiscal conservative argument. We all agree to what is a good for the public/society in general and then we fund those things and don't fund the others. If we deem football is not that thing I get that argument. There has to be an argument as to why football adds more than what it costs. I used to think that was obviously the case. More publicity=more students. I think an NCAA basketball run costs way less and is worth way more.Flipper wrote:Don't want to get political...but this is my general argument as well.Globetrotter wrote:I would drop football from D1 without question. I understand why some of you are saying that basketball might be a better investment than football..... BUT, are you sure you’re not being influenced by fact that March Madness is in its once a year super spotlight?
Right now, if you’re a BG fan, football has fallen off the table [ with hopes we’ll see a turnaround this year].
I admit to being an all sports fanatic, would hate to see us “downgrade “any program... with one possible saving grace re: football. That would be, as an FCS school we’d have a shot at playoffs and possible natl. championship. I believe I’d probably be the ONLY member of this group who’s actually experienced a natl. championship in football at BG, but times were different then. Beating Delaware for #1was a big deal then, but seeing wins against Purdue, Minn., Indiana etc among others has been a great experience .
