He's going into his final year...guy just took you to your best season since 2002...you can't let him twist on a one year deal. 2-3 years is at minimum what the market usually gives

He's not though. He signed a 6 year deal initially and has 2 years remaining on that original contract.

I think next season is the true time to determine whether he gets an extension or not. You never want a coach to be coaching on an expiring deal, so it's gotta be all or nothing next year.

Agreed. The lane duck seasons have been awful.

I would be ok with offering him a small extension, one or two years, at this point as a reward for a successful season. I have to imagine no extension or raise of any kind after a great run could be used by other schools as negative recruiting. A small extension is a small risk. Now don't go crazy and lock him in for five more years because we can get stuck in a rough situation.

In that case, he'll be at BG for about 20 more years until he retires. The drought will be at 70 years by then. Don't laugh....

Oh...never mind. No reason to extend him now

Giving an extension to coach who has coached 3 bad years after 1 good year is a bad way to do business.

THIS. I am hoping we learned our lesson on this with all of the really bad coaching contracts BG got stuck with because of the poor judgment of the last AD. It is far worse to be stuck with a bad coach whom everyone knows is going nowhere...than be in the last year of a contract and possibly have people use it as a negative recruiting tool. I'm no expert, but it would seem to me that players knowing the coach is really bad and they likely won't do anything good -- is far worse than a little bit of uncertainty.

Nick Piotrowicz of the Toledo Blade is reporting that BG and Coach Huger are working on an extension. The numbers and the length are currently unclear. I'll post them (or someone else will) as soon as they know.

Huger made a comment for the story saying that see the 1968 on the banner drives him nuts and that he wants to see a new one up there very soon. He said there is no place he would rather be.

I can’t really blame Huger’s agent for getting BG to do this. He has watched coach after coach get unnecessary contracts from BGSU over the years. The idea that Huger has been contacted by other schools is unlikely, and most likely agent created. Having a coach who does want to be here is a good thing, let’s just hope 1 year wasn’t a fluke.

I will admit, I'm VERY excited about this team's potential next year. 10 returning players, plus adding Ziegler and Turner, and our own Justin Turner is likely to be among the favorites for MAC player of the year. Next season will feel very different, with real expectations, but I'm excited that we might actually get to see a BG team play well WITH those expectations, as opposed to playing well and having it be a feel good story. I'm excited about the struggles and the growing pains within our new roles next year. The microscope this team is going to be under will be awesome, because it's so different from what it has been like in my lifetime. You don't have to love this move to be excited about next year - I can promise you that.

I'm excited for next season too. And I'm very open to the notion of giving Huger an extension after next season if the team lives up to, what should be, lofty expectations.

But handing out an extension when he's still got 2 years left on his deal and coming off his first successful season is beyond foolish. IT would be simply foolish if we hadn't already made the same damned mistake with Orr.

Bottom line, if you cannot afford to pay contracts and fire coaches you sure as hell shouldn't be handing them extensions until they're necessary. I fail to see any justification for giving an extension to a coach who has had 1 good year in 4, and still has 2 years remaining on his deal. Hand him an extra 2 years and then have the team regress and here we are stuck for another 4 years because we cannot afford to move on.
