Re: The case for Huger to go
I am concerned about one thing. We spend big $$$ on equipment and recruiting, but Reece's dad said the players don't get lot of gear (some D1 programs give even non revenue sports a shocking amount of stuff) What is that money being spent on...similarly...how is that recruiting budget being spent. Are we heading out on the road for a night at the Hampton Inn or are we booking ourselves into something less utilitarian. Are we talking trips to parts of the country to pursue athletes we have a hope in hell of landing, or we going places we want to visit and then doing a drop in to justify the expense?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Re: The case for Huger to go
I have zero faith the AD and the rest of the administration will do a thing about moving on from Huger, even though it's an on-going embarrassment for the university and a complete waste of money.
One name to keep an eye on for the next year or so is Jake Diebler, an Ohio State assistant coach. He's originally from northwest Ohio (played at Upper Sandusky) and his Dad was a long-time and very successful high school coach, so there are good coaching genes there. He's relatively young and would re-energize a program that has lost all energy and forward momentum.
But to move in any new direction, they have to cut bait with Huger and I have no faith that's going to happen, even though the spotlight has been turned on him (not in a good way) of late.

Wouldn't paying someone not to coach be the real complete waste of money, though?Falconwriter wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 11:50 am I have zero faith the AD and the rest of the administration will do a thing about moving on from Huger, even though it's an on-going embarrassment for the university and a complete waste of money.

Not when keeping said coach may destroy an already apathetic and dwindling fan base. Anyone who has seen the games can see BG gets outcoached the great majority of the games….it’s like like watching a movie you already have seen. You can wish for a different ending, but it’s going to end the same way. In this case bottom to middle of the pack in the standings and eventually Huger being replaced. Not many people want to watch that for 1-3 more seasons.

The fanbase is already so minimal and apathetic that it can't get meaningfully worse. When we're pulling 500-1,000 fans for home games, we can say that the program's fanbase is effectively dead already.

Re: The case for Huger to go
Whether or not Huger goes boils down to this: $$$. If we can't buy him out, he stays. I don't see any other factors as worth discussing.

It's really hard. I made it through the Dakich 2.0 years, I made it through the Orr years. Now Huger's tenure is longer than Dan's and equal to Orr's...with 3 more years still on the deal. It's absolute insanity what this Athletic Department has put us all through. It's not as though we've been the worst team in the MAC all those years. Instead we've been just in the middle going nowhere with absolutely no commitment to FIXING that.
As my son gets older every year my wife tries to talk me out of spending the money. She knows it just makes me upset more times than not. It's tough taking a kindergartner to games that end at 9:00 with a 20min drive home. It'll get even tougher as he starts to get involved in even more of his own sports/after school activities.
Another year of Huger ball has me ready to bail at this point. I know that when it comes time to actually renew I probably will; especially since my son lights up when we talk about getting tickets again (he hated missing the COVID year). But damn, it's frustrating to actually support this s**t show.

That is the beauty in the way the Athletic Dept. has treated the program. They know the handful of us keep coming back for more no matter how little they do to improve anything. They can't improve concessions, they can't improve parking, they can't improve on court product. It's all a shitshow, and they like it that way. They've effectively made this program so pathetic that they KNOW it can't really get any worse.
Of course, it could absolutely get far better but it would take actual effort/competence on their part.
But yes, you're correct, in order to start that process they now need to find $1.2m. Good thing we saved that $50k last year putting us on the hook for an extra $400k. All the Huger is a nice guy talk can shove it up their rear given how well he's screwed over his own alma mater to his own benefit.
Re: The case for Huger to go
Good god, Orr was here for SEVEN SEASONS?? In my mind I had it as more like three. Must have been a mental health thing to push those boring years out of my mind. Huger's teams have been bad but they haven't been nearly as boring as Orr's.hammb wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 1:50 pm

Re: The case for Huger to go
Oh yes. Louis Orr was here for 7 years. 7 years because of another terrible contract extension. Bowling Green just doesn't extend contracts for bad coaches, they do it for coaches who have no shot coaching D1 basketball again. Justin Turner is the all time leader in points. Jordon Crawford is the all time leader in dribbles.
Re: The case for Huger to go
At least Orr won a regular season championship. It was a lucky one and at no time were his teams entertaining, but at least he did something. BG athletics loves to hand out money to people who have done nothing. s**t Bergeron was finishing in last place and signing contract extensions every year.
Re: The case for Huger to go
Crawford has made himself a great living on the court post-BG. He should have been a much better player here and finally got the appropriate coaching after he moved to the pros.guest44 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 2:42 pm Oh yes. Yes, Orr's style of basketball was unwatchable filth.BillyLP wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 2:34 pmGood god, Orr was here for SEVEN SEASONS?? In my mind I had it as more like three. The atheist in me absolutely DESPISED him talking about god's glory and will whenever we won or lost.
Still, he was actually BETTER in conference than Huger. Overall record Huger's is better, but nobody has ever done a better job of scheduling himself 6 automatic wins every year than Huger has. Oh, and when everybody likes to talk about how it's impossible to schedule at BG, go look at Jans one year OOC schedule. No, we didn't play Duke, OSU, or even Cincinnati. But we did load up playing SEMO, Drake, CSU, Dayton, Wright St...in other words, we played viable regional D1 competition. Huger started here playing a similar group, but quickly got rid of those challenging games.

Comparing the state of the hockey and men's basketball programs circa 2010-2013 is laughable.TommyG wrote: ↑Tue Mar 08, 2022 2:48 pm At least Orr won a regular season championship. The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: The case for Huger to go
Where did I compare the programs? Bergeron wouldn’t have done anything if the old CCHA stayed together…he’s proving that point at Miami
