But we still are in the running for his teammate. Marquis Horne.

Do we have any open scholarships left for Horne?

This confuses me. Several posts earlier you mention Austin Calhoun and his status with the team. The inability to determine whether or not he would qualify would make the question...Do we have a scholarship open, very valid and unable to be determined by a roster check. When was the last time that roster was updated? Going forward a year we know how many scholarships will likely be available and we know how many people have verballed. None has signed or has been able to sign a LOI. Now we hear word that one of those scholarships may be open again because one of those 2 Aiken boys might not Qualify. It seems like the determination of how many schollies are open per year is beyond a simple look at the roster.BleedOrange wrote:Gang,
Every few weeks, someone has to ask how many scholarships we have left. In response, I will compulsively post a definitive list. A few weeks later, someone asks again, and I respond. Later, inevitably, "dahrrr… how many scholies?" And, again, I post a list. And so it goes, on and on. Well dammit, this has to stop. This routine used to make me giggle, but now it has gotten downright disconcerting.
Here's the secret: bgsufalcons.cstv.com has links for all men’s and women’s BGSU sports. Find the mens basketball link, and then find the word "roster". Click on that. You will see a list of players' names and classes. Ignoring walk-ons, count all names not listed as "sr"s. That's the number of scholarships officially committed for the next year.
Thirteen (13) is the key number. Subtract the number of scholarships officially committed (from above) from thirteen (13). That is the number of open scholarships. Write that number down so you don't forget it. Next, list the names of our verbal commitments on a piece of paper. Count those listed names and subtract from what you just wrote down. (Remember to double check your work.) THAT is how many scholarships we have to give. Congratulations. You now have the answer.
Sheesh.

Sigh.
Ooookay. How about this? I'll create a Falcon Scholarship Calculation Worksheet that takes you through each step, line by line. It would be similar to the 1040EZ form that you use for income tax. I'll make it a .pdf and have Grant make it available on this site.
When a player's status is in question, DO include him in the initial count, but annotate his name with an asterisk. For this, I'll include a supplementary worksheet at the bottom for players pending. The final step would be to count names with asterisks and add to your preliminary answer. Now, you have a range rather than a single number. For instance, if your preliminary answer from the main worksheet was 2, and your result from the supplemental work sheet is 2, your range is 2-4. These means that there may be 2, 3, or 4 open scholarships, depending on information not yet acquired.
Keep your worksheet in a location that you'll remember as it is your working copy. When you get confirmation of pending a player's status, you can adjust your range data accordingly. Simple!
