I had some free time this afternoon and was bored enough that I made the drive out to BG to check out the construction in person. An impressive amount of steel has gone up, and there are even three or four bleacher supports that have gone up, which I didn't realize based on simply looking at the Stroh cam. I really couldn't form and impression of the overall relative size of the building. Looking straight on from the East it is impressively tall, but driving down Wooster it seems less so...very hard to get an idea with how little of it is up. Really, I was just having a hard time picturing how this was going to fit into the overall landscape, and after seeing what I did I'm even more excited than I was before which I didn't think possible. :)

It has been a while since I have been back to just drive around campus, and I am stunned at how much is going on. You can't really see much of the Wolfe Center driving around it, but that is one B!G construction site! If you weren't looking for it you probably wouldn't notice the dugout construction at Stellar Field, but it is happening, and this is the first time that I have really noticed the new tennis courts fully completed. It is mind-boggling to think that shortly the Rodgers and Mac areas are going to be under construction at the same time, too. This is truly a very exciting time at BG.

Even more exciting, though, was Mr. Spots for lunch, and Pollyeyes brought home for dinner...

I was down in BG last night and the thing that surprised me the most was how close the building is going to be to Wooster street.

Does anyone know if the side facing Wooster will have any glass that will allow people driving by to see inside? That would be cool to drive by and see people packed inside.

That was the point I was asking about earlier. The pictures, where you see the "south entrance," the doors actually are pointing east. It is simply on the south side of the building.

So the "money angle" is pointed towards I75, not Wooster.

I'd say you'd probably get to see a glimpse inside through the east-facing windows as you drive into town, though it looks like all steel/aluminum on the south end facing Wooster. I think it still works. Thousands of times more cars will be glancing over from I-75 every day than driving west on Wooster St.

This may be jumping the gun a bit but what kind of opponent will we bring in to open the Stroh Center? Do we try to get a Big 10 team? Or a solid Midwestern program like Xavier or Butler?

Actually, VOLLEYBALL will probably make that choice, as they will be the first team to play in the Stroh!

Then we need PAC 10 like Stanford or UCLA

Men's basketball will open with Tiffin, Urbana, and Heidelberg.

Yeah, sure. And we'll have U2 open the first concert. ;-)

It is a fine new building they are creating. But it isn't going to meaningfully impact scheduling I think. Improve, maybe, but nothing earth movingly cool.

Did they design this building with any possible expansion? Seems to me that the building could be expanded a bit. But then we do live in BG. What passes for a "metro" area up in Lucas county doesn't seem likely to every grow again. So barring the unlikely, seems they have what they'll have for many years.

Tiffin will not be the team as they will probably be on Ohio State's schedule that year.

I don't think over the long haul it will affect who we can schedule at home but for a one-shot deal to open a brand new arena I think we should be able to bring in a perennial top 20 team. If I recall correctly way back in the day Toledo opened Centennial Hall against the Indiana Hoosiers who were the defending national champs.

It all depends on how much money the athletic department is willing to spend on an opponent.
