Re: BG v Mathew Broderick State
I see what we are trying to do initially but after the pick and roll it does not continue. Shut down that and we seem to be in force mode.
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

I wouldn't have even expected a loss like this in the last 5 seasons...

The headline says that all: "D-II Ferris State whips Bowling Green 82-68"
I think Harold Anderson rolled over in his grave. Then in the story they referred to us as Ball State.

They outshot us every which way: 49% to 42% from the floor, they hit 9-18 three pointers to 2-8 for us, and they made 19-22 free throws to 14-23 for us.
We never even had a lead for the entire second half at home to a D-II school.

We are south for the holidays so didn't make the game. Just saw the score.
What the hell??? Was Jans all over these guys or was he home sick?

I didn't make this game… Thankfully… But when I saw the score update I thought it had to be a mistake because we were losing by double digits in the closing minutes. Sadly, it was not incorrect.AZZZZ wrote:We are south for the holidays so didn't make the game. Just saw the score.

I saw the score on Twitter and thought it was a mistake also.
I've been (and remain) incredibly impressed with Jans. Just can't see him allowing this to happen. Can't wait to hear comments.

I just googled an article to try to find out how often this occurs and this is what came up:
Entering the first week of December, Division I teams were 226-0 at home vs non-Division I teams. In 35 of those games, the Division I team scored twice as many points as the non-Division I team. If you include road games, DI teams were 232-1 -- Rice lost at Alaska-Anchorage as part of the Great Alaska Shootout. You might remember Memphis' loss to Christian Brothers Academy a few months ago, but that was in an exhibition game. Drexel lost to the University of the Sciences but only by two.
It looks like we are in rare air getting whipped on our home court by a lower division opponent.

Well, for a program that hasn't sniffed the NCAA tournament in so long, it's only one of a handful of schools to be in the middle of this type of drought -- nothing surprises me.BGSU33 wrote:I just googled an article to try to find out how often this occurs and this is what came up:

The football team set a few NCAA records for poor defense this season...why not have the basketball team add its name to the list of BG embarrassments this sports season?

Yep, they put up a scoreboard and Ferris scored more than we did. In fact, this entire team was hot....it wasn't our lack of defense more than they got hot. Drew Lehman scored 29 from just about anywhere and they had a group of shooters that didn't miss much.
For us, Zach Denny had a nightmare game. He was 2/7 in the first half and didn't improve much in the second. The frustrating part is that we kept trying to force the ball into the paint while Denny was on the wings. However, his shot was flat so I don't know if the offense is to blame for not getting him the ball or if it would have mattered. jovan Austin missed the first half, something about a foot injury and Parker was not very effective. The only two bright spots were Holmes and Clarke.
Anyway, this "DII" team is now 9-2 and they could probably beat both Michigan and Michigan State the way they played today.

Jans gets a pass on this one, only because it's year 1. Simply cannot lose to a D2 school in a game that counts. If it was an exhibition game for us and we were playing some bench guys, I could see it, but it wasn't an exhibition. We've put so much money in our basketball program, they have a top 3 facility in the conference (from an esthetics standpoint. From what I understand there were several shortcuts and planning flaws that makes it average from a basketball operations perspective), a top end budget, etc. Just amazes me how BGSU Basketball continues to disappoint. I think Jans will get it turned around, but this is a major gut punch for sure.

Ugh!!! Joe Pesci (Jans) will round up his boys Sal, Vince, and Guido and whip these punks into shape for SFU. They will arrive with chains, clubs, and and blow torches. God I wouldn't want to be at the next practice. Joe will take care of this business.

Bad loss for sure. However, the team has had a solid start to the season. This doesn't hurt anything in terms of competing in the MAC. Going forward, I think it is clear the recruiting has to improve. Looking at our team, I would say we are not that far away from having a D2 roster. I was looking for more out of Jans' recruits. Not one of them has had an impressive game in 10 tries. His pass this year is that he had to take the recruits he could get quickly after he got the job. Until we get consistent shooters it will be hard to have the success people on this board are expecting

Re: BG takes day off v Matthew Broderick State
A bit surprised when I saw the score scroll across the ESPN ticker. But taking a closer look it's not as embarrassing as some have stated. The GLIAC is a very strong DII conference (many of those schools in it could compete at the DI level) In fact, if the MAC ever eyes expansion, it should look to the GLIAC for schools such as Ferris or Grand Valley State.
This year's Bulldog team could be a DII final four team. Their only two losses are to Quincy (109-107) and Univ. of Missouri-St. Louis (71-70). Both are also solid DII programs from another top DII basketball conference, the GLVC.
In addition, Ferris State was extremely competitive in other DI exhibition game, against Oakland Univ., the Bulldogs led for most of the first half, at one point up by 15 points. Oakland rallied late to beat them 94-87.
