Speculating here – either this one incident must have been over-the-top embarrassingly bad – OR - there was a pattern starting to take place before this

Either way - it's frustrating as hell

Well this is a punch in the gut. The shock I've felt over the last couple hours reminds me of hearing that Matty J was out for the year after WKU.

I guess one question I have is if his support staff, assistant coaches, were with him, why didn't they calm him down, get him out of there before this all happened? I've been out with friends that were on the verge of getting out of control and have ushered them out for their own good.

There seems to be an underlying character issue here, that I'm not sure Kingston would have ever known about.

A couple questions / comments.

1. This incident happened on the night after our season ended. We got blown out at home by Canisius and then go to a bar and drink with assistant coaches. Were any players possibly involved?

2. I understand a young girl slapped Jans and asked him to leave. For her to slap him why weren't the police called and why hasn't she pressed any charges.

3. Why did BG wait 10 days to come to this decision. It's a little odd that this decision is made on the same day Gregg Marshall signs a new deal. Is it possible BG was hoping Marshall would move on and WSU would hire Jams and then BG didn't need to make this decision.

4. Did Jans possibly have an alcohol problem. BG wasted no time in making this decision. Were they aware of any past issues similar to this.

Yep...given the increased level of concern re alcohol abuse and sexual assaults at colleges across the country, it doesn't surprise me one bit that the University applied a zero tolerance policy to a coach getting liquored up and harassing women to the point that one of them mollywhopped him.

Just be glad it wasn't Ronda Rousey...he lost his job but kept his arms.

definitely agree with Azzzz.....how the hell does an assistant let this get that far? Do we want a guy like that to be here still?

Ten days is a fairly swift timeline to gather facts and make a firing decision of a contracted employee.

Maybe I've become holier than thou, but if it got to the point of a woman slapping him and needing to be thrown out of the bar it is a fireable offense IMO. Is that the case for any Joe Schmo? No, not really. But it is for somebody who is in a public spotlight position of power at the University. You cannot just sweep that stuff under the rug in the name of winning. At least I don't want BGSU to do that.

Consensual coach/student relations I can tolerate. The occasional getting a bit too drunk and rowdy at a bar I can tolerate. Any amount of force that leads to the ramifications mentioned in the article above is too far, IMO, even if it was a single incident. When you become a head basketball coach you are a face of the University. You're held to a higher standard, and winning is not enough to excuse that sort of behavior, IMO.

Maybe he was so drunk he didn't recall how badly he behaved?

That was also the night of Animarathon. Was he made aware that cosplay does not equal consent?

This is just a ridiculous situation. Kingston loved the guy so I would assume that it has to be legit.

According to HustleBelt website, Jan's was at a bar after a game in JANUARY and was obliterated. Now this is one persons word and is hearsay but if true it appears Jan's may have more other problems. Not making excuses but I don't think this would have happened if his wife and kids would have moved here rather than staying back in Kansas until after Maddie graduated.

It looks like he may ha e developed a drinking problem. It is too bad the administration did not know about it. He could have received some help.

For anyone saying BG must show the video.... That is ridiculous their first responsibility is to the student on the video and her privacy and protecting her. Secondly I am guessing this is a pattern of behavior. You don't fire an employee after his first year as a successful coach, but the university and it's students/reputation always come first.

How do you know they didn't and weren't already trying to help?
